I'm looking to vent a bathroom exhuast fan Went to replace & found it was vented to the attic?
| June 29, 2010 | Posted by dinelson under Questions about Soffits and Fascias! |
The fan isn’t located near the gables, the soffits won’t work & I don’t relish the idea of going through the roof (Mom of 4, big work & I already have too much to do!) This fan vents near an adjoining bathroom fan that vents outside through roof(Go figure?) Can I attach a Y type device @ the roof exit & join 2 vent tubings – 1 from each bathroom? If not any other suggestions?

It is preferable
to vent the new fan outside of the attic by adding a wye to the existing vent pipe (using the same roof jack)
than
exhausting the new vent into the attic.
It won’t be the end of the world in either case
but why vent moisture into the attic
when it can be avoided?
Just be certain both vent fans have back draft dampers…
You should have a backdraft damper (flapper) at the outlets of each fan. Verify that they’re there and you can wye the fans together. Not the prefered set up, but it’s better than venting moist air directly into the attic.
If your getting back flow of cold air or odor its all about what kind of fan you purchase. You want a fan that opens and closes when the switch is on. Its normal for bathroom fans to exhaust dirrectly into the attic. You can join it to you other vent exhaust system but that would just be more work. As long as your not getting backflow don`t worry about it because the air will find its way out.
Just leave it venting in the attic, unless you’re in the shower 24/7!
I would hook it into the other exhaust. You don’t want all that moist air going into the attic. With 4 kids plus you that is a lot of showers.
If its just a half bath (no tub or shower) let it exhaust into the attic.
