need some advice on roof/fascia boards?
| July 7, 2010 | Posted by dinelson under Questions about Soffits and Fascias! |
okay, our roof is leaking around the edges, i know that the fascia boards need replaced, but i’m not sure if it’s leaking BECAUSE of the fascia being badly damaged or if there’s further damage. i need advice on how to go about seeing which it is, because i don’t want to start pulling things apart and get in over my head. yaknow? i DO know that we don’t have a drip edge for SOME reason, do you think this could be causing the leakage?

Rotting fascia boards are not a cause of roof leaks. The leak is from poor flashing on the roof somewhere, broken or missing shingles, etc. When you do the tear off, replace the fascia boards and soffit, replace any damaged sheets of plywood, and install new drip edge and flashing. If you don’t know how to flash a roof, get the pros in. They can get the job done quickly and safely, and you won’t have to pick up all of the shingles you tear off. It will cost more, but you will have a guarantee. Hope this helps.
Are your gutters clean?
If the roof has a low pitch, the rain can roll under the edge of the shingles behind the gutters if they are not tight against the fascia. If you can get up there safely with a hose or watering can, watch where the water goes to locate the trouble.
Obviously, the gutters will have to come off to repair the boards so when they are replaced make sure they are tight against the fascia and under the (new) drip edge. Hope this helps.
Good luck!
It wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination if the roof is leaking around the edges and you need new fascia boards that if you do repairs around that area the leaks will stop.
