Which Direction Do Soffit Vent Covers Install?

We have ugly holes with screen soffit vents. Upon repainting, im replacing the ugly holes with flush mount soffit vent covers. Do the vent slots face towards the house, or outwards torwards the yard?

face down so the rain runs off to the outside not to the inside
Usually slots face toward the house so that you cant see into them.
Away from the house so the water can not bounce inside them off the wall.
