Many scientists agree that the most important difference between humans and animals lies in our ability to develop and use various tools. A tool is something that gave people a possibility to do things that would be impossible to do with our hands only. And it is not that hard to find the right example. Think of a drill for instance. It would be quite a challenge to make a hole in wood or steel etc. without having a drilling device to our service. It should also be mentioned that steel and many other types of materials would not exist if there were no tools.
Let us go back to the past and see what the history of a drill was. Ancient Egyptians used to have a bow drill to make a fire with. However, it was also used as a tool in simple wood working. A bow drill was sometimes used in Egyptian dental hygiene as well. So, those who are afraid of modern dentists should be happy they do not live in ancient Egypt. A bow drill consisted of several pieces. They were the bow, the spindle, the fireboard, and the bearing block. The spindle was wrapped with the string. The string was held in the place by the bearing block and the fireboard at opposite ends. The string was also attached to the bow to provide leverage.
Another ancestor of modern drill that was developed hundreds of years ago is the pump drill. The flywheel was fixed to the bottom of the shaft while the piece of board with a hole in the middle was put over the top of the shaft. The cord was pulled through the hole in the shaft and attached to one of the board ends. There was a hole at the end of the shaft to place the bits. The board was supposed to be held still. And the shaft was rotated to allow the board to reach the top of the shaft and the cord to wound around it. Afterwards the shaft was placed on the material and the board was pressured down. The shaft was spinning quickly until the board reached the bottom of the shaft. After that it was allowed to rebound to let the cord wind around the shaft again. Then the drilling went on.
A drilling tool that may seem more familiar is the bit and the brace. This is a drill with a u-shaped grip. Pressure should be put on the top of the drill and rotational movement should be provided to the grip at the same time. So, you had to use you both hands to drill a hole with this device. The u-shaped drill was a type of crankshaft that had some advantages above other hand drills.
