If your property frequently has high levels of moisture in the air, you could be facing problems to your home and your health. High levels of moisture in the air can lead to a rise in molds growing in your home, all of which can cause damage to your health. A dehumidifier (or luftbefeuchter in Germany as I found out) can help to reduce the levels of moisture in the air.

However, if you have to keep a dehumidifier constantly running, you should get your house checked for structural weaknesses. Alternatively, if you are searching for a new home to buy, finding any existing mold problems is important before you take the keys.

While searchin for a new property, you should always consider any smells within the property. Particular smells inside the house are a good sign that there is a mold problem. Even if you can smell bleach, this may be a sign that the current owners are trying to remove mold using the combination of bleach and water.

Molds generally create a musty smell in the home, especially in bathrooms and any basements as these are common areas for high humidity.

A university in America is currently researching into a system which would allow you to look up what the air quality is in that area. Even though this system would only work for outdoor air quality, it does give you an idea of what it’s like in the houses. Generally if the outside has quite poor air quality, this will then spread into the homes and buildings in the area.

Unfortunately the system is still in testing, plus it would require thousands of sensors which would monitor the air quality of a city. If you don’t want to wait for that, you could use a thermo-hygrometer while house hunting to monitor the air quality.

If you currently have a problem with high moisture levels in your home, a dehumidifier is one way to combat it. However, if the problem isn’t controlled then the mold spores can spread around the home and cause damage to your property. Fixing problems caused by molds can be expensive to resolve and if it’s not done, the mold can harm your health.

It’s odd, as I was researching for this article, I found lots of foreign equivalents. It’s slightly odd how the Mexican translation of dehumidifiers humidificadores, and the French word, humidificateurs, can be very similar, however, the German translation, luftbefeuchter, is totally different.
