Colorful Decor, Happy Homeowner
Yes what colors you have on your walls or in your rooms will directly affect how you feel. It’s been proven in many studies that have been completed. So if you want to change the feeling of a room, change the color and the dcor. But don’t overdo the choices that you make, sometimes too much will hurt instead of help.
Calm and relaxed colors like moss green or baby blue work best in rooms like the bedroom where you’re supposed to unwind. Repainting bedroom walls in those colors will help alleviate anxiety for anybody who enters the room. Lighter pastel colors are best because they don’t call attention and are visually ‘soft,’ so they’re not tiring to look at.
As a color, red is very distinct because it has a lot of visual energy; anything that has even a hint of red will immediately command your attention. On top of that, researches have found that seeing too much red literally will elevate your heart rate and magnify emotions like anger and aggression. A few touches of red here and there are good for evoking romance and passion. Just make sure to grab your color wheel and decorate the rest of the room in a complementary color or with neutral tones.
Light yellow is very appropriate for public areas like the dining room because it’s a happy, vibrant color that captures a great mood for gathering rooms. Natural light also works well with shades of yellow, so the color will work great for living rooms, sun rooms and just about any place with windows. Just keep things towards the softer end of the yellow spectrum so that the color doesn’t get too overpowering.
You can use different colors in a room, but try and keep some neutral color in there too. Perhaps a nice rug that is more a neutral color to tone down the colors you have picked out. Perhaps that red that you love so much, if you have it in a room where you also have a rug that is beige you may well have a wonderful room. Try not to use more than two colors in a room though.
Colored area rugs are also an option, but you have to switch the roles and delegate a neutral color to the walls and all the other decor pieces. In that case, the rest of the room works together to help balance the visual effect of the rug, keeping the overall image from getting messy. For either arrangement, though, the rug has a central role in the final outcome of the room, so you should pay careful attention when choosing the area rug that you’ll use.
Though it’s a bit boring if you can’t find any other color that you feel will work, paint the walls white. You can always add in colors through other aspects of the room. With some great accessories or curtains that splash in some much needed color the room may actually look better than had you chosen a different color on the walls. Even though colors are nice you can overdo some of the choices you may make. Bring home some samples to test out what colors you were thinking of placing on the walls.
