Water jet sewer cleaners are the most advanced most powerful and most environmentally sound sewer cleaning devices in the plumbing industry. High pressure jetting devices can break up sludge and debris in the pipes. They can pulverize tree and plant roots and clean even the toughest of blockages. Water jet cleaners can clear out hardened scale that forms on the side of the pipes, and they literally flush the debris out the other end.

The effectiveness of the water jet cleaners is due to their ability to focus high pressure jets of water to all parts of the sewers and pipes they are cleaning. The specially designed nozzles swivel as they clean so that the water cleans in a 360 degree radius as the nozzel moves along the pipe.

In modern units, jet cleaner pressure is adjustable, so the pressure can be set to the correct level for the job at hand. It is not unusual for commercial models to reach pressures of up to 17,000 psi. At 17,000 psi, the water jet can cut through flesh before the operator can react. The jet water is often contaminated which can serve to aggravate wounds caused by the apparatus.

Needless to say, with such potential for harm the operators must exercise appropriate caution. Injuries have occurred and usually take place when the nozzle accidentally exits the pipe, while the high pressured spray is still flowing. The last stages of the job when the jet nozzle is almost pulled all the way back, is the most vulnerable. The operator has the water on at full blast to clean the last of the pipe, and the nozzle is closest to the hole opening. When the nozzle has accidentally exited the hole, operators have been injured by the water pressure itself or by the weight of the nozzle as it flies through the air.

One worker was killed in 1999 as he was completing a routine cleaning job for a metropolitan sanitation bureau. The tube was equipped with a safety sleeve which helped prevent the nozzle from slipping out of the hole. The worker turned off the water and removed the sleeve and then apparently put the cleaning hose back in the hole to rinse it off. As he turned on the water, the nozzle somehow slipped out of the hole, flew through the air and hit him on the head. He suffered fatal cranial injury. Another worker was killed in 2001 when a hose coupling failed. The high pressure jet of water that exited from the hole injected him in the abdomen, inflicting fatal internal injuries. The incident served as a reminder that employees using the water jet equipment must strictly follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
