Consumers have many options when it comes to door locks. Home safety is a booming industry, and there are many options available. This article attempts to break down the categories of locks, to help consumers make an educated decision.
One of the most common locks for interior doors is the Privacy Lockset. The emphasis here is on privacy, rather than on security. These locks are primarily intended for situations where the main objective is to stop family members or friends from entering. These locks are primarily used on interior doors like bed or bathrooms. People generally love these locks for their ease of use.
The locks used on exterior facing doors are very different. Obviously, you wouldn’t want to use an interior lockset for this, because of safety concerns. Instead, most people use what is called an Entry Lockset. On one side of the door handle, there is a button switch. On the other side, there is a keyhole for a substantial key.
Many homeowners want an added measure of safety for their exterior doors. A deadbolt lock can be a perfect solution for these people. Deadbolt locks work by extending a “dead” slug of metal into the door frame, which may or may not be accessible from the outside.
For people who want the added safety of a deadbolt without all of the hassels of drilling that come with interior installation, there are surface-mounted deadbolts. The function of surface-mounted deadbolts is essentially the same as that of the regular deadbolt, but rather than being installed into the door, the deadbolt is screwed onto the interior facing of the door. A metal flashing is attached to the door frame.
A handleset is really a combination of different locks. Handlesets are very common setups for exterior door, and generally consist of a deadbolt lock and a regular lockset. Available in both single and double barrel varieties.
Yet another option for an additional layer of safety and security exists for homeowners to take advantage of. This option is the night latch, which is essentially a secondary locking mechanism that automatically latches when the door closes. These locks can provide an excellent solution for homeowners looking to supplement their security.
Choosing a door lock can be incredibly difficult considering the vast array of options that are out there on the market today. But I hope that by sharing some of the basic varieties of locks and their functions, I have made the picture a little clearer for those that are looking for door locks. The information is available to help you protect your privacy and your safety!
