You are an active mom, and you want some help decluttering! Everywhere you look you see clutter! No matter how many times you remind your children to put away their toys, whenever you turn around there is another mess that will have to be cleaned up. You’re sick of the constant clutter, but what are you going to do about it? How can you get back that peaceful, orderly home that you had before your children were born? Much more importantly, how can you help your children develop good organizational and decluttering skills?
If you don’t want to be the one cleaning up your children’s clutter until they move out, the first thing you need to do is establish a plan of action. Sit your family down and talk about the clutter you see as a problem. Explain what you want (a neat house, no more toys and books left everywhere, a place for everything and everything in its place, space to put things, etc.), and then ask for their ideas on how you can get it. Get their “help decluttering”. Get your children to come up with a plan that makes sense to them! Believe me… if you simply lay down the law, say “it shall be so”, and then expect your house to get mess-free and organized, it most likely won’t happen! HOWEVER… if you can get your children to come up with ways you can get that calm and orderly house back, they will be MUCH more willing to help you follow through, and without your constant urging! If you can somehow make decluttering a game, that’s even better!
Moms, even though “your home is your castle”, your little princes and princesses also have some “ruling power” in your house whether or not you admit it. After all, whose items cause the most mess? (If the answer is you, well, you know that moms lead by example, right?) Expect your children to give you help decluttering. Afterall, they share the home too!
Your children should be involved in assigning places for things to go if you expect them to remember where they do go. You’re probably thinking “I tell them time and again…” but, have you ever considered asking your children where they think a particularly-often-left-lying-around item should go? For you, his clutter help just might come in the form of your son telling you that he always leaves his book bag on the floor by the entry way because he can’t be bothered with going upstairs to his room to put it away before coming to you to say hi. A solution he might come up with that would solve that problem could be for you to add a hook beside the coats for him to use for his bag!
As you are a busy mom and you need some declutter help if your house is not to constantly look like a hurricane went through it. Get your children involved in solving the mess problem, and not only in cleaning up the mess. Teach them to dislike clutter, and your home will soon look lovely and decluttered once again!
