Red wine. Certainly the worst wine to spill, red wine can cause a permanent stain if not handled correctly. White wine stains. Spilling white wine is not nearly as bad a red because it has much less tannin in it (the coloring in wine). The best option for getting up white wine is sponging it with hot soapy water. You can then use the talcum powder technique afterwards to get rid of any wine smell.

Champagne. This is whole different ball game altogether as you shouldn’t necessarily rush to clean up a champagne spill. You might want to do this because the bubbles found in champagne work to remove dirt withing soft furnishings by breaking it up and lifting it away from the fabric. Placing glass vases or crystal vases over the spill will keep it from drying out and the cleaning effect will go on for longer.
