Down the ages, human feelings have found great expressions through the tradition of giving flowers or bouquets. It is believed that this custom has origins in ancient traditions whose evidence has been unearthed by archaeologists at excavation sites. The Middle Ages saw a furtherance of this tradition, and France and England were chiefly responsible for transferring this tradition down the ages. The present tradition of giving a specific meaning to each flower was brought to the West from Turkey, from where the French and the British imbibed it and disseminated it in Europe.

Flower gifting acquired much significance among the Victorians who widely indulged in this custom. Exhibiting feelings in words and before everybody was not considered as good manners during the Victorian period, and hence people used subtle ways to demonstrate their emotions in the form of presenting flowers or bouquets.

The general rules of gifting flowers or bouquets were formulated during this era. To take an example, buying a bouquet of red roses from a florist and presenting to your beloved upside down would surely annoy her. This is because red roses which are otherwise associated with emotions of love can communicate negative feelings when they are presented to the recipient upside down. In fact, a large number of books were written and disseminated on the language of flowers in the’th century.

Time has not been able to diminish this custom, and people in the present era still consider flowers to be the most effective means to express their feelings. Today we have reached a point where meaning is assigned to a lot of flowers, and preset guidelines in this custom are more important than they ever were. Gifting a bouquet of red roses is considered to be an expression of love, while lilies are considered as representing attractiveness and purity. A lone marigold flower is regarded as an expression of sorrow, while friendship is best exhibited by a yellow coloured rose.
