Horses easily get bored within the stalls. Some of them get anxious and nervous when left on their own. Stall boredom could often lead to the development of destructive habits and behavior. That is why it is important to keep your horse busy within the barn. And there are some horse toys to make your horse happy and occupied when it has to spend some time inside. There are some very expensive horse toys on the market, but we will try to tell you about some rather simple and cheap ones.
You will be surprised to know that some horse toys could be found at your recycle bin. Just try to think creative and you will find lots of great toys for your animals. Different plastic bottles and milk jugs are great to entertain your horse. You could hang them in your horse’s stall. Horses usually like the sound that appears when hitting them. You could also put several pellets of grain into clean milk jugs and put it on the floor. If you leave the cap off, the horse will be able to roll the jug around to make food appear. Horses really enjoy this!
Horses love vegetables and especially carrots. You could hide several carrots around the stall. Just do not put them in the bedding. Then your horse will be able to keep busy looking for carrots and exploring the stall.
Knowing that your horse likes turnips you could easily turn this into a new game. You need a really big turnip. Make a hope in it and hang the turnip from the ceiling on the rope. Here you go! It is a fun and tasty toy to play with.
You could also put an apple into your horse’s water bucket. Most horses find it very interesting and keep occupied trying to get it out of the water.
A good leather football is also a great toy for your horse. It is safe and durable too. However, you might find it rather expensive. There might be sales though. And you could always shop for used balls as well. Some horses like to play with big balls and hula hoops too.
Metal bells are also lots of fun for many horses. They love to play them! Just be careful: you could get annoyed by your horse playing a bell if you stay around. So think twice before you get such a toy for your musical horse.
Many horses love listening to music as well. Most of them like classical music. But you could try different genres to see what your horse likes the most. It will be really great for you if you have similar musical tastes.
Horses also need company. They love to communicate. If you are not able to buy another horse, then think of getting a goat or a barn cat.
