The table saw has been around for about 200 years. Nobody knows for sure who invented it.
Many people credit Samuel Miller of England In 1777 with having made a wind powered saw. There are two other theories, one is Walter Taylor a shipbuilder in 1762, and the last is a Harvard Shaker woman who in 1813 put a notched disc on a spinning wheel to cut shingles. Thanks to their inventiveness we have the table saw as we know it today

The table saw comes in several forms. The blade on the saw can be driven by a belt or can be direct driven where the motor mounts under the table and the blade mounts directly with no belt. There is usually a transmission or gear assembly between the motor and the blade arbor.
Table saws can be broken down into four classes:
• Bench top saws these are often low powered small and light weight.
• Contractor saws these are larger and usually have a folding base and usually have wheels.
• Cabinet saws are designed for workshops and are on a stationary cabinet, these are much heavier and more powerful having a 3 to 5 horse motor on them.
• Hybrid saws are table saws that combine features of cabinet saws and contractor saws, usually they are larger, and higher powered than contractor saws with enclosed cabinets for better dust control like a cabinet saw but smaller and lighter.
There are many table saw accessories for your table saw. Here are several:
• Dado blades; a dado blade is usually a stacked blade and is used to cut grooves in wood and also used to make tenons. Dado blades usually cut up to nearly 1 inch wide on a single pass they have two outer blades and chipper blades in between to form a clean slot. A dado blade is a necessity if you plan on creating shelves.
• Taper jigs are another handy accessory. A taper jig is needed to cut angled rips on your table saw that are unable to be done with your miter gauge. Using a taper jig gives you a clean angled rip better than normally accomplished with a circular saw. Angle jigs are pretty cheap. It is also an accessory you could make yourself if you were doing a lot of the same angle.
• Safety Glasses are more than an accessory they are integral. Table saws are one of the most hazardous tools in your shop. Safety glasses are fairly inexpensive but tend to be tossed around and get scratched.
Buying a glasses strap to keep them around your neck when not in use saves money and time because if you’re like me you won’t have to spend 20 minutes searching for them every time you need them. A case is also handy.
• Hearing protection is another shop necessity. There are three basic types of hearing protection;
o Disposable foam plugs usually purchased in a pack,
o Ear muffs are the more costly and cumbersome choice but are the most durable ear plugs,
o Silicone rubber usually comes with a case and string to hang around your neck, use caution with any thing hanging off of you around power tools.
• Dust Collection dust collection can be as simple as a heavy duty vacuum cleaner hooked up to your tools one at a time when in use, or can be as elaborate as a shop system that connects to all of your tools at once.
• I-Socket: If you are using a vacuum on an individual tool, an I-socket is a great accessory. An I-socket allows you to plug a tool in one socket and a vacuum in the other so when the tool turns on and off the vacuum goes on and off with it.
• Push sticks are one accessory that should come with your saw. A push stick keeps your fingers away from the blade when cutting small pieces, Push sticks are fairly inexpensive and can even be made fairly easily.
• Feather boards are used to keep the wood snugly against the fence or the table depending on how you set it up. Holding the wood against the fence with a feather board means a more safe way to cut and keeps your hands away from the blade.
• Cross Cut Sled, you can buy or build a cross cut sled. The advantage of buying is that some of them come with a large protractor to help with making easy angle cuts on larger pieces. They also work well for making shelves with dado blades because set up is faster than with other fences.
• Roller Stand, using a roller stand when cutting larger stock [promotes safety|is much safer[/spin] because you are not running around the saw to catch it at the other side or pushing down hard on it to hold it up.
• Zero Clearance Throat Plate, using a zero clearance plate eliminates the gap on either side of the saw blade so smaller rips don’t drop past or kick back. They can be purchased pre sized or you can buy the stock and cut them to fit your brand of saw. Sometimes the original throat gets bent and wood catches on it when you get past the blade, when you replace it use a zero clearance plate instead.
• Table Extensions are available for most saws. When purchasing table extensions you may also consider a fence system to go with it.
• Digital Fence System, adding a digital read out to your fence is a perfect accessory to add. These can be added to an existing saw.
Adding these table saw tools to your table saw can make wood working much more enjoyable.
