Garage Sales- Friend Or Foe

Estate sales can make or break a person hanging on the brink of Living Organized. Following a few simple mindset rules can make saling a great experience that will not disorganize your life.

FRIEND- Having a Rummage Sales can be a great way to get rid of all the clutter laying around your home and garage. Although you really need to know how to. Organized living is made easy is you follow a few easy rules:

1.
STICK TO YOUR GUNS- Remember you are selling your junk, your clutter, your garbage. That being said, if an item makes it into the sale, it has to be gone forever, Whether you sell it or not! Never bring an item from your sale back in the home.
2.
PLAN- Set your sale dates and adhere to them. Are you having a Thurs-Sat sale? Great, that way on Sunday you can box up all the leftover item and bring them to your favorite donate location on Monday.
3.
TALK TO YOUR NEIGHBORS- This works wonders for me. I try to set up Block sales every summer. This really commits you to going through with clearing the clutter out. Not to mention, it brings a lot more people to your sale!

FOE- Do you turn the car around when you see the magical sign” Garage Sale”? If you are like me you do. There has to be some kind of power in those signs that makes me to head straight for the greatest cause of clutter in my home. I found a few things that have helped me get though this:

1.
ONE IN, ONE OUT- My home is always hanging on the brink of total clutterville. By committing to getting rid of one equally sized item for every item I buy helps maintain the status quo. First it makes me “Think” when I am at a sale “Whats this going to replace?”
2.
PRICE DOES NOT MATTER- Disorganization has no price . Just because something is a good deal, does not mean it is a good thing. I have an friend who loves to show off what he got for 25 cents at his last sale stop. The problem is he usually pulls the item out of a box, sitting on the floor, in his garage or home. I figure it only costs him a few dollars each to have boxes of junk he will never use.
3.
IT’S JUNK- “One mans junk is another mans treasure” or so the saying goes. It would be more accurate if it were “One mans junk is another mans CLUTTER!” Try to keep in mind that the reason they are having this sale is to remove the clutter from their homes and garages. Their goal is to move their garbage to YOUR house!

Overall Garage sales can be a lot of fun and certainly can find fantastic deals at them, but make sure you follow the above steps. If you keep this attitude when you stop at a sale, you will be far less likely to buy that “Deal” item that will never be used. Good Luck and happy saling!
