The Prestige Excellence Hot Water Boiler
I had a chance to talk recently with Alan Urszuy the Co-Owner of A-1 Plumbing of Baltimore, and I asked him “What’s new in plumbing? Alan quickly replied that there are new developments in the area of combining the functions of a boiler and a hot water heater. I had heard that the combination boiler heater is very popular in Europe and I wanted to know why it has not gained popularity in America. Alan side-curved that question, but seemed to indicate that while there are some great models coming out in America, such as the Triangle Prestige Excellence, they only produce enough hot water per minute for a one bathroom home.
If you’re looking for an appliance that will spark American interest in the combi-boiler, you needn’t look further than the Triangle Prestige. As a boiler alone, the device has a lot going for it. It’s sleek stainless steel tank is corrosion free, which means there’s no need for a sacrificial anode, and it has a long life. The High grade stainless steel burner uses pre-mixed air and gas providing a 25% to 100% modulating firing rate. The Prestige uses a microprocessor electronic control module that automatically adjusts blower speed and gas flow rate to modulate boiler firing rate to closely match boiler output for space heating or DHW heating demand.
The Prestige combi-boiler adds an inner “tank within a tank” to this superior boiler. The Triangle Company, makers of the Prestige combi-boiler actually coined the term tank within a tank. As well, they developed a unique system of baffles which direct water flow through an exchanger and around the combustion tank, thus facilitating the rapid production of domestic hot water from the convection heat exchange with the boiler water. The Prestige’s indirect heated water tank can hold up to 14 gallons, and can spontaneously produce up to 180 gallons of hot water an hour.
By combining a heater and boiler in one unit, the combi-boiler saves space in the home, and is ideal for small dwelling units. The water production rate of 3 gallons a minute is sufficient for a one bathroom home, and this is the feature which limits the effectiveness of the combi-boiler in homes with more than one bathroom. Nevertheless, for a small condo or dwelling unit, which only has one bathroom and needs to save on space, the combi-boiler can be an excellent choice. In Europe and England, where there are many such homes, the appliance has been a plumbing heating favorite for decades.
I talked with Byron Jones the Co-Owner of A-1 Plumbing of Baltimore, a Baltimore plumbing company, which specializes in plumbing heating, and he told me had had just recently installed a combi-boiler. The customer was going to purchase a complete tankless heater, but changed his mind after Byron showed him how he could save money and still meet his home’s need with a combi-boiler.
If you need a new boiler or water heater and live in a one bathroom home and therefore, need to conserve space, ask your plumber about the benefits of installing a combi-boiler in your home. Thanks for reading this article. That’s what’s new in plumbing.
