Dogs have long been recognized as “man’s best friend. They do make exceptional companions and superb family pets. But to be a decent doggy citizen and a noble family pet they need to be well trained.
As soon as your puppy arrives home you need to start off training him for obedience. You can expect your puppy to be effectively “fully trained” at about a year of age, however you will need to work with him to keep his skills sharp for the balance of his life. A well-trained dog is fun to own and a joy for people to be around.
The first and most important rule of all dog training is that you must be the “alpha dog”. There are people who may not like the phrase “alpha dog” and you can call it whatever you like but the truth is that dogs are pack animals and they need a leader. You must be that leader. Also every human being member of your family must outrank the dog. Dogs will conform and do anything for the affection and approval of the pack leader so that must be you.
Never let your dog to demonstrate domination. He must wait for his food until you are done eating. This is a understated but critical thing. You must also never let him jump on you or other people either.
Never permit your puppy to do stuff that would not be tolerable for an adult dog. This includes nipping and jumping at you and others. Consistency is one of the most significant things when it comes to training your dog. A dog does not deduce like a human and if you don’t want your dog to jump on you when you are dressed in your business suit then don’t let him jump on your when you are in your play clothes. Consistency is essential.
Using a crate will make all of your training easier. Dogs feel protected and secure in a cozy and comfortable place that they regard as their own. In the beginning your puppy may moan in the crate but if you just leave him in there he will grow to like it. Using a crate will make housetraining and obedience training easier.
Your dog’s safety is dependent upon him being able to take in and comply with the orders of “sit” and “stay”. There will be times that you will need to be in charge of your dog in order to avoid the troubles of running off or jumping on the people that visit your home.
You will most likely also want to train your dog to walk on a leash and to heal and after the basics you can move on to the amusing things like fetching. Well-trained dogs make the best pets so be a responsible pet owner and teach your dog well.
