Calls Are Pouring In To Pest Control Specialist From Homeowners Being Invaded By The Box Elder Beetle
Hi, and welcome to another episode of “Day in the Life of Dovid Davis, pest specialist. I just talked with David, and he told me that it’s the second day of spring weather in Baltimore and he has already had 6 calls from people wanting his help to get rid of Box Elder Beetles. And I’ll admit, that’s 6 people who knew more about the Box Elder Beetle than I did, until I had my chat with Dovid.
Box Elder Beetles are beetles that live on mature elm trees, a species which is quite popular in the Northeast Their characteristics colors are grey with an orange-red strip across the back. They emerge in the spring, and crawl and live on the south side of buildings and homes, where they can absorb the radiant heat from the sun.
The problem is that when the sun sets, and the temperature begins to drop, these beetles will then try to get into homes and buildings. They penetrate into the house through windows, cracks and doors. A good gathering of these beetles can be in excess of 2-3000. and typically, 10% will succeed in entering the house,
Once the beetle has entered the home he will start breeding. At that point, according to Davis, an outdoor pest has become an indoor pest.
The beetle is so problematical because of the sheer numbers. Say 3,000 beetles are congregating on a house wall and 10% get in, that’s 300 bug pests crawling around the home. Additionally, when anyone tries to kill these beetles manually they produce a reddish orange stain. The stain will get on the walls, the floor, and the carpet, whatever surface the beetle is on when someone crushes it. The best form of eradication, according to Dovid is interior and exterior pest control treatment.
According to Davis, the Box Elder Beetle will be around for the next two months. They will disappear during the summer and return in the fall.
His advice to homeowners who see Box Elder Beetles (grayish beetles, with the orange reddish stripe on their back), climbing up their wall, and trying to get into their home, is to immediately call an exterminator.
Well, that’s it for another report from Dovid Davis, Baltimore pest control pest specialist. And I want to wish you all a pest free day!
