Beginning guitarists sometimes experienced a lot of problems in their guitar journey and decided to quit. Some gave up because they never produced good musical tones with their guitar while others complained they could not take the pain.

These problems may be related to the guitars they used. Some parents for example bought cheap guitars thinking that if the children quit they would not lose much. This idea is not completely true because picking wrong guitars can also lead to a big frustration.

Cheap guitars are OK as long as they meet the condition below:

Check for warped guitar neck. Press one string at the first and 12th fret and look at the gap between the string and the frets on the fretboard. You should see a little tiny gap only between them.

The next important thing is to find a guitar within your budget that has a good playability. Good playability means it should feel comfortable in your hand. Getting a right guitar will help eliminating the unnecessary muscle tension because the strings tension is softer. You should be able to play any chords on the fretboard at any place without sore fingers.

A guitar with good playability normally has a low action. Action is the distance measured from the top of fret #12 to the bottom of the 6th string. Try to get an acoustic guitar with action 3mm to 4mm.

Never neglect the guitar intonation. Good intonation will give you in tuned notes at any fret on the fretboard. It is very common to find a cheap guitar with perfect strings tuning but when playing bar chords on the high numbered frets all you get is out of tune chords. This is related to bad intonation and you can’t fix it. If you are in doubt take some measurement on certain frets with the help of a guitar tuner.

Should you are interested in budget guitar it’s a good idea to ask somebody experienced to accompany you to the guitar store and ask him/her to pick some for you to test. From those preselected guitars find one that is most comfortable with you. Don’t be fooled by the guitar coating or any aesthetic factors that can mislead you.

If you follow this tips correctly you can get a fairly good guitar at a reasonable price. Don’t waste your money for something you can’t play.
