The Days When Function Followed Form
We live in an era where function is paramount and often form is an after thought. Think of the days when people considered household objects, like telephones and radios, as fashion icons and status symbols. Many people believe they represented a golden age of design.
Perhaps one of the best examples of this is the eternally classic retro telephones. Whether you were born during the time of the originals, or perhaps not, most people know the look and sound of these timeless classics. Whenever I hear the ‘old fashioned’ ringtones on a mobile phone, I think of the originals and an era of black and white movies. A new generation is out there expecting modern technology, but also appreciating the classic styles of a bygone era.
With a retro telephone, you are in a ‘win win’ situation, combining style and elegance of the classic era with the sophisticated technology of the modern day. The subtle curves the phones are perhaps my most favourite attribute. Car designers noticed this also at the end of the last century, when ugly square shapes where replaced by more gentle curves. This makes them great and unusual gifts for any occasion.
Just like retro phones, another usual gift to consider as we inevitably more from summer to winter might be hot water bottles. Long gone are the days when, short of ideas you might whizz down to Boots and buy your Granny either blue or pink one for Christmas. In this day and age they are big busines, as they come in a vast range of funky styles, shapes and colours. One of my favourites comes in the shape of a cushion, made from fully recyclable rubber, which is far more ergonomically suited for those neck and lower back pains.
