There are few things that are more satisfying than leaving the hustle and bustle of normal life behind and setting out for the great outdoors. However, whether you are leaving to enjoy a week at a campsite or heading into the wilderness, the right equipment is vital and a strong camping tent should be among your chief concerns.

There a few different factors that will dictate which is the right camping tent for your requirements. If you do not camp that often and conditions will not be too extreme, then something cheap and cheerful should satisfy your requirements. On the other hand, if your camping tent will see a lot of use in all kinds of weather then it definitely is worth splashing out on good quality and the right design. There are few things more unpleasant than having your camping tent falling to pieces around you in the middle of a stormy night.

One of the most important things you need to consider is the number of people your camping tent needs to accommodate. Tents can vary in size from one-man, with enough sleeping room for a single person, to big family tents with a few rooms.

The second thing to consider is convenience, both in terms of the weight of the tent and how easy it is to assemble. If you are hiking you will want something that is not too heavy, certainly weighing no more than five kilograms. One-man tents can weigh as little as 1.5kgs, though lighter tents usually cost more.

How easy your tent is to assemble should also influence your decision. If you plan on setting up camp somewhere for a few days, then this is not a major worry. On the other hand, if you need put up your camping tent every day, maybe sometimes in bad conditions, you will require something that you can assemble quickly. Some camping tents literally pop up in just a few moments, while other models could take a good 15 minutes to erect.

There are a number of different tent designs and some are better built for certain conditions and needs than others. If you are a casual camper this needn’t be a big concern. However, if your tent will regularly be exposed to wind, rain or even snow, design can make a major difference.

Geodesic – This is regarded as the strongest of the camping tent designs. Intersecting tent poles ensure it has excellent strength to withstand extreme weather conditions. This is the camping tent for the serious outdoor expeditionist.

Dome – This is perhaps the most popular camping tent design. It is lightweight, is inexpensive, is easy to assemble and offers excellent overall strength. A popular choice among backpackers.

Tunnel – Another common choice, though not quite as lightweight as the dome tent. However, it is notably more spacious.

Finally, it is essential that your tent’s fabric is made from high quality fabric. Lightweight nylon or polyester are the perfect fabric for the job, and, of course, they should be completely waterproof. In addition, it is often a good idea to waterproof the seams of the camping tent yourself as a final precaution.
