Your guinea pig will be spending most of his day in his cage. Be sure to read the following tips to be sure that you make the best home possible for your guinea pig. One of the most important things is the amount of space that he has, but there are other things to consider as well.

With the most important consideration being space, what you want to look for is about 2′ x 3′ size, or about 6 ft.. This will be sufficient for a single guinea pig, but they will still enjoy being able to get out and get exercise each day.

Next, let’s discuss the sides of the cage. The most important thing regarding the sides of the cage is that there is air circulation. It is important not to use a fish aquarium for your guinea pig’s home. This will cause the air to become stale and can cause respiratory problems.

You will definitely want the cage to have the top. Again our recommendation is that it is of wire, but a plastic top will work sufficiently as well. do not leave your pet guinea pig’s cage uncovered, especially if you have other pets in the home. This is to keep your guinea pig safe.

The bottom of the cage should not be wire. Wire bottoms can cause pain to your guinea pigs feet, and can make it difficult to walk. What you do want for the bottom, is a smooth plastic surface it can easily be washed.

Most guinea pig cages that are available at stores such as Petco or PetSmart are designed to be ideal for guinea pigs. They include the plastic bottom pan, wire sides in usually a wire top. They also include a large door opening for ease in removing your pet.

Another thing that you want to consider in addition to the type of the cage that you purchase, will be where you put the cage. One place that you do not want to put the cage is directly on the floor, as there may be a draft, which can be unhealthy for your guinea pig. Choose a sturdy table or counter for the cage, being sure that the size of the table is at least as large as the base of the cage.

Following these simple essentials will guide you to finding the perfect guinea pig cage for your furry friend. Your pet guinea pig will thank you for it.
