The activity of archery displays one skill in propelling an arrow with the use of a bow. The person who practices archery is called an archer, sometimes he is also referred to as a bowman. There are conventional bows, and there are also crossbows. Historically the bow and arrow was used as an effective device employed for hunting and on a lot instances used for combat.
With the advent of firearms, the demand for the use of archery in hunting and combat has steadily declined.
These days, we have a found different ways of using and enjoying the art of archery. There are some who indulge in the activity for recreational hunting, and some are seriously involved in archery as a sport.
Archery is considered a rigorous skill discipline sport. In this game the archers are taught a proper and correct stance and shoots and draws in a particular disciplined manner. Accordingly, in its proper form, the archer erectly stands assuming a T position. Usually, in one fluid motion, the bow is raised and drawn. The bow is then release by relaxing the drawing hand and let the bow find its mark.
For sports, arrows made up of composite materials are highly favored. Fletchings for this kind of bow are usually died in one color. The dyes have different stiffening effects on the fletchings thus most athletes prefer it in a single hue. Furthermore, the single color comes handy in identifying kinds of arrows during training.
Hunting with the use of archery is a recreation greatly enjoyed by many. In this activity, the need for the archer to be close to its prey whether by still hunting, stalking, or waiting in a blind or tree stand is emphasized. In bow hunting as it is sometimes called, the aid of a firearm is enlisted to ensure the death of the target. Bow hunting also enjoys longer legal seasons than other modes of hunting.
Archery can also be used as a spectacular display of skill and discipline. In circuses or Wild West shows, archery is employed in the impalement arts. Humans are the usual targets. In the strict sense they are not actually targets since the objective of the art is to miss them with very narrow margins.
Archery has served man in many forms since the medieval times. Today, archery is an activity that does not only provide recreation, but develops skill and discipline.
