Safety guidelines are important to know and understand before undergoing the simple process of purchasing crib bedding for your new baby. When it comes to safety and quality standards, you will find that numerous child safety organisations have put out lists of requirements and recommendations for parents who are trying to pick out crib bedding. Infants are too small to protect themselves from suffocation, so there are guidelines for putting your baby to bed safely.

Experts say that babies should only be sleeping on their back and they should not be allowed any soft bedding. It is true that toys, comforters and other decorations give an appealing exterior, but they are a health hazard for an infant. Only a mattress covered with fitted sheets in the crib should be adhered to. If using a blanket, make sure it is securely tucked in at the foot of the bed and that it doesn’t go higher than the baby’s chest.

Crib bumpers are unlikely to interfere with a baby’s breathing if the bumper is tightly attached to the crib rails, but many doctors advise against them anyway to remove the risk entirely. Problems with bumpers have led to the production of many alternate methods. There is no universal consensus as to the usefulness of crib bumpers, and accordingly you will probably find one in the set when you purchase your baby bedding. There are many different opinions about baby bumpers, so use your discretion to determine whether they make sense for you.

Follow American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines on crib bedding until your baby is at least a year old, by which age she should be mobile enough to push items such as bedding away from her face. Prior to age 12 months, however, some adjustments to the crib’s contents may still be necessary to prevent injuries. Once a baby can sit up, and especially when they can stand, you should lower the mattress and get rid of anything the baby can use as steps. For safety purposes, parents should not use crib bumpers, as children can easily use it as a step to exit their crib.

SIDS becomes much less likely after the baby’s first birthday, and more bedding can be added to the crib to make it comfortable and look better. People use comforters and bed skirts to enhance the blue and brown decor. Getting a small, fuzzy blanket will give your baby something to snuggle and a way to stay warm. While pillows act as a companion for many children under the age group of 2,most children prefer stuffed toys with them at night.
