Traditional Rooms
The traditional aesthetic is a classic style that, if pulled off right can impart any room with a look that is expensive-looking and elegant. Done well, traditional decor can be both attractive and cozy, striking that ideal balance for any room. It’s a style that innovates or surprises or innovates little, and is more concerned with balance and the overall look. All in all, it’s a very versatile look that can work with just about any kind of home or ambiance.
Neutral colors are preferred for traditional-style spaces, primarily because they don’t command too much attention and can thus look good with practically anything. Instead of painting your walls anew, you could also choose to just wallpaper the room. For wallpaper, though, try to look for designs with geometric or small floral prints. Decorating the walls using the traditional style is all about keeping everything classic and understated yet visually appealing.
When you go to pick out what kind of furniture you want in the room, you will need to stick with a specific kind. Look for either a more antique looking European look or a nice Victorian design would work too. You don’t need to buy the real thing though; many companies will make great looking reproductions that will cost you a lot less. The wood should be dark and the material of the chair should be a darker color too.
Crown moldings are a popular addition for this particular style, and doing it in plain white gives a very refined touch to the room. Aside from these, refrain from adding other accents to the room that you’re decorating. The first priority of the traditional aesthetic is to have a room that’s simple yet elegant and unfailingly sophisticated. Clutter is the biggest obstacle to this look, and should be avoided at all costs.
Arranging the furniture in a traditionally designed space is a fairly straightforward task. Put pieces together in groups of two or three, always preserving some sort of symmetry around a central object or axis. Traditionally designed rooms also often have a focal point like a fireplace or a big table, around which most of the furniture is arranged. You could find one in the space you’re decorating and then use it as a basis for the position of all your pieces.
Flooring in traditionally designed rooms is almost always limited to hardwoods. To keep it from getting too plain or somber, though, you may also want to put a rug here and there. Area rugs in a deep or neutral color will add visual interest to an otherwise solid floor, giving the room more character and depth. While plain rugs are fine, the area rugs present a rare opportunity to use floral designs in a room with a traditional design.
The traditional style seems to always be in vogue. People love this look, and it is a great way to decorate a room where you have people visit a lot.
