Once you have graduated as a Hairstylist and spent a few years as an employee in the Industry you may get the desire to open your own business. At first, you may feel it is beyond your reach but in most cases, it doesn?t have to be that way. After all the Salon owner where you currently work did, so why can?t you? The downside is that you have no control or input over the Salon you are working for you must follow the rules and there may be no place for advancement.
As a successful Hairdresser, you may not realize that you possess many of the skill requirements of being a business owner. You know the importance of time commitment and being punctual. You know how to multi task and you have great people skills. You are able to fill multiple facets of a business such as sales promotion, basic accounting skills and even being a receptionist. You are used to working long hours.
An ideal start up business could very well me a mobile hairdressing business. It wouldn?t take a great deal of capital to get started. Most likely, you have the majority of tools and equipment required for the trade. The benefits you are going to enjoy from having your own business are those such as whatever money you earn is all yours not just a portion as was the case when you were an employee. You will be in charge of what hours you are going to work. That doesn?t mean you won?t be working those same hard long hours that you have been used to. The difference is now that you are doing it for yourself.
In your own business, you can use your creativity. You may have had some great ideas for the Salon that you were employed at but were not in a position to implement them. With your own business, there is no one to stop you and you can try out your various ideas.
Just remember starting your own business requires no less of a commitment than your employment did. In fact, you will find that you have greater responsibilities because you have to oversee everything. Don?t start out too big incurring many heavy expenses. You can do without this added pressure. If you proceed slowly then you will make sound business decisions, otherwise you may make the wrong decisions because you are under financial pressure. Also, be sure that you aren?t going to be dependant of the new business to carry you financially for the first little while. It takes time to build a business to the point of being profitable.
