The often uncared thing which can be dangerous in winter is the frozen pipe. To ones surprise many people are not ready in treating a frozen pipe.

The best way to prevent pipes from freezing over is to keep the water temperature warm. In other words, don’t leave your water heating off for prolonged periods of time. Alternatively, place a portable heater near pipes that are likely to freeze, or you can even use a high wattage bulb to the same effect.

The other possible way is when you are away from home for some days then leave the taps in your house in dripping mode. It will make sure that the water in the pipes is in flowing condition and thus will check the water in the pipes from freezing.

Whilst many of us will have to deal with plumbing that is already installed, if you happen to be in the enviable position of having new plumbing installed, then do not have the pipes fitted to the outside of external walls. For the majority of people with existing plumbing, it is still possible to combat the hazards of winter by insulating the pipe work.

You can reduce the injury done to a frozen pipe at an early stage. A pipe is frozen can be known if there is ice or frost on the external side of the pipe, and if there is no water even if the tap is turned on.

If you have identified a frozen pipe, then the most important task is to soften the pipe as early as you can. For softening the pipes there are many apparatus, but a simple hair dryer will also do. But do not take a wrong step of using heat from a bare flame. If you are unable to soften the pipe on your own, then take the help of an experienced plumber who can carry out the job perfectly.

Once the melting of the pipe is done find out if there is any leaks. If and when a leak is noticed, you can either solve it on your own or you can engage an experienced plumber.

There is no option for you when you find a frozen pipe but to think of solving the problem.
