Learn How Building Green Works Operates Coming Of Age Nowadays

Green home constructing and remodeling needs a different approach than the conventional, established way of constructing.

Usually the houseowner, you, approaches an designer who designs the home, based on your imagery, ideas, dreams and wishes.

The finished design is then dispersed to several general contractors for bid.

The general contractor in turn contacts his/her subcontractors to get bids from them for all the individual parts of the work like framing or plumbing.

The bid costs are based on the interpretation of the plans by every contractor. Hardly ever do the subcontractors talk to every other throughout the bid process. Hardly ever is the architect contacted with questions. Almost never is the homeowner, you, contacted.

The contractorrs’ final bids typically include a list of exceptions and/or a contingency stipend, which might never be utilized, but is paid for by you nevertheless.

Homeowners most frequently accept the lowest bid. Why not? But for you are familiar with and know the building business, know the contractor’s quality of work, what other criteria could you relate?

The procedure outlined above often results in significant building cost increases, dissatisfied houseowners and sometimes lawsuits.

Huge resources are being neglected and missed when homes are remodeled and constructed the traditional way: Knowledge and trade-specific know-how, which could save you time, cash and headaches.

The Green Process To Constructing A House

Building a green house must be a systematic approach and done as a team. The thing must be looked at as a system, in which each part is connected to and depends on the other components. For example:

- Location of the home on the property can determine the amount of soil disturbance, excavation and landscaping
- Destination, size and types of windows can influence the heating and cooling obligation
- Type of heating and cooling gear can influence space necessities for furnace, heat pump, solar collectors, piping, ductwork, etc
- Option of exterior wall will impact first cost versus installation price versus insulation values versus appearance

You get the idea

Teamwork is required to make it all come together. The individuals who plan and construct your green home, can be working with you and with every other for weeks or months. These are some vital questions to ask when assembling your green building team:

- Do all of the team members agree on the importance of building green and are they dedicated to it?
- Do designer and contractors have knowledge in green building and if not, are they caning to learn? The majority if the team should have some skill in designing or building green houses
- Do you like and respect them? Can you see yourself interacting with each of them regularly and maybe work through some challenges?
- Do they like and respect every other?
- Do they take pride in high value work?
- Can they recognize input about their trade from other trades?

Don’t underestimate the importance of your team getting along and working well together. There will be times throughout the construction when tempers flare, tensions are high, pressure is on. And this could be just when the insulator has to do some very meticulous work to seal all leaks, while the electrician is breathing behind her neck to hurry up so he can get his work complete.

It is imperative to include as many of the trades as likely during the design phase. Decisions about options in materials or heating system or anything else can then be done by all concerned parties from a fully knowledgeable perspective.

Green Living For Your House -Thin Film Solar Panels Demystified

By Jason Livingston-the operator of www.GreenLivingRocks.com where you can learn how to build a solar panel, build homemade windmills, and begin living green

Thin film photovoltaic solar panels are a newer, thinner type of solar panel that has the promise to make solar energy much more affordable. They rely on the same photovoltaic process that “thick” solar panels use. Put simply, the PV cell contains semiconductor material. Sunlight passes through and interacts with the semiconductor material, and creates an electric current. This electricity can be used immediately to power appliances in your home or business, or stored in batteries for later use.

So what’s so great about thin film solar panels? Well, thick solar panels (the original generation of solar panels, and the ones you are used to seeing), traditionally use crystalline silicon for the semiconductor material. It works as a way to create electricity from sunlight, but it’s labor-intensive to produce. Each cell has to be produced on an individual silicon wafer, one by one, which makes it expensive. This is the main reason that solar panels have not been widely affordable in the past.

However thin film photovoltaic cells use materials for their semiconductors that are much thinner than crystalline silicon. The “thin film” semiconductors can be mass produced using automated systems and less expensive materials. At this point, the process is almost 3 times less labor-intensive than the process for manufacturing the traditional crystalline silicon thick cell solar panels. So the cost to manufacture solar panels is coming down. This means it will be cheaper for new start-up businesses to enter the solar panel manufacturing market. And as more businesses produce and supply solar panels, prices will drop even further.

The “thin film” process also means that the solar cell is smaller, lighter weight, and can be applied to materials that are smaller, lighter weight and more flexible themselves. In fact, “thin film” technology has redefined the look of solar panels so much that you might not recognize them. Instead of needing a heavy and elaborate steel structure to hold a large array of thick silicon-based solar panels in place, the thin film panels can be integrated into the roof or wall itself.

Thin film composition roofing shingles and thin film panels for metal roofing are already commercially available and being used in construction. Smaller portable solar panel systems are being manufactured to power up your electronic devices. Cell phones, GPS devices, MP3 players and even televisions and laptops can now be powered with thin film solar technology. These portable thin film solar panels are small enough and light weight enough that you can “install” one on your backpack or carry one in your purse. And just like digital watches, which cost hundreds of dollars only a few decades ago, it won’t be long before the cost of solar panels will be so low that we’ll be buying them with our pocket change at the corner convenience store.

My Watch A Rolex Explorer

I bought a Rolex Explorer 2 while I was visiting Switzerland a few years back for vacation. The watch cost about $2000, which is a bit expensive but I was also thinking about reselling it here in the states.

I ended up just keeping the watch rather than selling it. The watch is water resistant up to 100 meters and is made from stainless steel. I do a bit of diving time to time so it was deep enough for me. The watch works perfectly underwater.

The Rolex Explorer watch weighs 8 ounces. I am not arthritic so I can deal with the weight, though if you do suffer joint pain you might want to go for a lighter watch. The watch has an hour, minute, time zone, second hand and a date much like the original explorer.

The date is made larger with a bubble that serves as a magnifying glass also the way the hands ticks are very smooth. It is really nice listening to the watch, also I find the design to be a lot better than rolex submariner.

The watch comes in two different dial colors. There is a black dial and a white dial. My watch has the whit dial and looks great. One great thing is the quality is so good on these watches that it looks the same since I got it.

The watch system is automatic, meaning there is a half weighted pendulum that powers the mainspring. The mainspring then powers the other springs and gears which in turn powering the watch. The watch has a clutch system that makes sure you don’t over wind it.

A small problem with this watch for potential buyers is that is not very well known. People who see it can’t really tell it is a Rolex. For those people who buy Rolex watches so they can say they own a rolex might want to buy a different model. On the up hand, this is an excelent ownership watch.

This watch features a sapphire crystal as the glass piece. This crystal is very resistant to all daily abuse that is put onto your watch. You can rest assured you won’t get a scratch.
