The Indie Band of the Decade Contest

With a decade of music behind us, it’s time to recognize some of the many great musical talents whose work defined the last ten years. While I could list many more than five, I figured that I might as well narrow it down to the most influential and prolific bands of the decade in my mind.

In doing this, I’d like to narrow it down to five before choosing one in my mind whose influence and body of work was stronger than any other. There’s no right answer to this, as it’s all a matter of personal tastes.

The first time I heard the White Stripes, I heard their White Blood Cells album, and I was floored. Their sound was a classic one, but a fresh sounding one at that. This band’s work was full of energy, and Jack and Meg White were great.

The layered sound that two musicians were able to produce is remarkable, and the band’s success spawned off a handful of other bands whose influences were rooted in garage rock. It was great to hear the White Stripes then, and it still is now.

Next on the list is Radiohead. Many might call them the band of the 90s, but they’ve been just as integral this past decade, further polishing and evolving their sound.

Every Radiohead album seems to build on the one before it, with more experimental and adventurous music filling out every one of the band’s releases. Radiohead as produced some consistently incredible music.

While the White Stripes and Radiohead have been hugely successful, Wilco has enjoyed its own success on just as large a scale. This band has produced a wealth of great music during the decade, and its story is just as interesting.

Just when Wilco’s record label was ready to give up on the band, Wilco decided to turn on its label and release Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, their 2002 album, independently. Everything is history from there, as some of the decade’s best releases were crafted by Wilco.

Having said all that, it’s a tough decision but I think I’ll go with Wilco here.

Bookbinding History and Systems

There are few hobbies or skills out there that combine the feeling of the white collar knowledge with the blue collar skills in the way that bookbinding does. Not only does this hobby or trade allow you to work with books (sometimes very old books if you’re repairing), but bookbinding also forces you to become skilled with your hands in order to work the stitching or binding as needed.

Many people start out with bookbinding because they want to self-publish a book, a collection of manuscripts, or a manifesto of some kind. In this case many will use plastic binding, or spiral bookbinding in order to put something together. But some bookbinders will go the extra mile and deal with hardcover bookbinding and stitching in order to ger that just right look.

Another way of getting into bookbinding is to ignore practicing repair work and to start a new project from scratch after buying the materials you would need. Many people will self publish and then hand bind their own books, like a family history. Another common example of bookbinding includes spiral or plastic coil bookbinding, which will help to put together reports and other similar publications.

Bookbinding has a long and proud history, one that starts all the way back in the 2nd century in Egypt. Coptic bookbinding was practiced by the Coptic Christians in the area, and involved making folds on individual parchments, then sewing through the folds in order to make a larger book. This type of bookbinding lasted nearly one thousand years.

Following Coptic bookbinding eventually was long stitch bookbinding, a method that is often still used by bookbinders today. Long stitch bookbinding isn’t an exact process as there are more than one method that fall under this general style. The most notable part of this style is that the stitching goes through a slotted cover, which minimizes (if not eliminates) the need for glue.

While it might not be what you think of when you normally think of bookbinding, spiral bookbinding might very well be the most used method in the world. This is the type of binding that takes place for spiral bound reports, school histories, or even local cookbooks. Also referred to sometimes as “plastic coil bookbinding.”

There are many types of bookbinding, and different people may find different methods preferable. Do a little research, give it a try, and you might find that bookbinding is just the hobby you’ve been looking for!

Sourcing The Best Tattoo Supplies

Though tattoos have been around for quite a while now, the amount of tattooing being done today across the world is many times more than what it was any time in the past! One primary reason for that is an increase in awareness about the safety and quality of the tattoo supplies being used.

If you have got a tattoo done over a decade ago, and if you head down to a good tattoo parlor today, you will be amazed at the kinds of tattoos that are now available ” thanks to the superb equipment being used. A customer can choose whether he wants the tattoo to stay on his body for a week or for a year. Then there are also tattoos which can be removed later on using some special removal agents.

If you are a tattoo enthusiast, we should tell you about a few modern tattoo supplies which have changed the way tattoos are inscribed.

Disposable materials have made an entry into the tattoo industry as they have almost every other industry. Disposable needle tips are the first product that should be mentioned here, if you are a professional tattooist, then disposable needles will save you hours of time every week where you would have been constantly cleaning and sterilising the same needle for repeated use, and they probably wont even amount to an expenditure with the amount of time they save and how cheap they are.

Then there is the tattoo machine, which is now into the second generation. There are two kinds of machines in popular use ” the standard tattooing machine and the pulse machine. Both of them have artists vouching by them, and they both have different models available online. Since they are made to standard sizes, it makes a lot of sense to pick these machines up, and use the disposable supplies we mentioned earlier.

Sourcing the right tattoo supplies is one of the most important decisions to be taken by a studio, as that is what drives traffic and branding.

Night Photos Taking – Why is the Photo Quality So Low?

Many keen camera users have a compact, sophisticated point-and shoot camera which is used for most if not all of their photography needs. Most of these cameras are from manufacturers such as Canon, Sony or Samsung. It the camera is fairly new, it probably features a high megapixel count and a host of other fabulous technical features, not to mention its probably sleek and sexy too.

Although you have all these fabulous features, you may be puzzled, disappointed or frustrated at your inability to take a quality photo at night or in low-light such as indoors away from a window. You may have found that photos you take at night come out either blurry, horribly washed out by the flash, grainy/noisy, lacking in color, or all of the above.

Why is this? The fact is that almost without exception, any camera will take sharp, clear, photos in good light ” such as the light outside during the middle of the day. It is much more difficult for your camera to take a photo that approximates what your eyes see when the light is dim. The primary reason for this is that in order to gather enough light to expose a bright enough photo your cameras shutter has to stay open a lot longer when the light isnt good. Because it is impossible to hold a camera completely steady with your hands alone, your photos will therefore be blurry. To get around this, you could use flash (which often looks unnatural and gives people a nasty-looking complexion) or a high ISO (which will add ugly digital noise), but these methods have their own problems.

Listed below are three tips to help improve your low-light photography:

1) When you purchase a camera, ensure it is equipped with an ‘optical image stabilization’ feature. This technology refers to a sensor inside the camera that will compensate for any movement from the person holding the camera and correct it to make sure you have a quality photo.

2) Try turning off the flash and asking your subjects to remain very still. Have your subjects move nearer to you in low-light or simply play around with your cameras Night Mode setting in the menu. It is important to remember that in Night ode, you must remain very still.

3) If the subject of your low-light photo is non- moving such as a building, try bracing the camera against something. A small tabletop tripod is easy to carry and works great, however, in a pinch, a tree or light post can serve the same purpose.
