The Biggest Athletes of the Past 100 Years
Considering that just about none of us were alive at the turn of the 20th century, it’s hard to write this article without at least a trace of bias.
If we weren’t around to see these athletes in action, we’ll never really know just how much they meant to the world at the time. Despite the fact that we’ve heard all of the stories, it simply isn’t the same. Having said that, I’m going to do my best to account for this too.
It’s hard to narrow this list down to five, but these are the five men who I think had more meaning to their sports than any others. This is all subject to opinion, and I’d love to hear yours.
The first person I’ll mention is a baseball player whose impact could never be felt today like it was a century ago. Ty Cobb was one of the most influential baseball players in baseball history, and is largely responsible for the sport’s popularity.
As far as boxing goes, Muhammad Ali was the most high profile boxer to ever grace the sport. His personality and charisma were second to none, and the same can be said about his boxing skills.
Pele is often considered the Michael Jordan of soccer. Considering the fact that more people worldwide watch and play soccer than any other sport, he easily commands a top 3 spot on this list.
Babe Ruth. The Babe officially put baseball on the map and made it America’s pastime for nearly a century. He was a legend of his time and still remains the king of the home run in the minds of many. If not for Babe Ruth, baseball wouldn’t be as big as it is today.
In the basketball world, everyone wants to be like Mike. Many of us were fortunate enough to see him in action, and Jordan was the kind of athlete whose talent is witnessed once in a lifetime.

How To Become A Professional Pilot – Getting Your License
All prospective pilots must complete high school. A college-preparatory curriculum is recommended because of the need for pilots to have at least some college education.
Most companies that employ pilots require at least two years of college training. Courses in engineering, meteorology, physics and mathematics are helpful in preparing for a pilot’s career. Flying is taught in military and civilian flying schools. There are approximately 600 civilian flying schools certified by the FAA, including some universities that offer degree credit for pilot training. Pilots leaving the military are in great demand.
Certification or Licensing
To become a pilot, certain rigid training requirements must be met. Although obtaining a private pilot’s license is not difficult, it may be quite difficult to obtain a commercial license. Before you make your first solo flight, you must get a medical certificate and an instructor-endorsed student pilot certificate. In order to get that, you must pass a test given by the flight instructor. The test will have questions about FAA rules as well as questions about the model and make of the aircraft you will fly. If you pass the test and the instructor feels you are prepared to make a solo flight, the instructor will sign and endorse your pilot certificate and logbook.
To apply for a PPL (private pilots license), you must take a written examination. To qualify, you must be at least 17, successfully fulfill a solo flying requirement of 20 hours or more and meet instrument flying and cross-country flying requirements.
Types of Pilot Licenses
Student pilot certificate – Used for the initial training period of flying. Student pilots must fly with a flight instructor and can only fly solo after receiving appropriate endorsements from their flight instructor.
Recreation pilot certificate – Limits the pilot to specific classes and categories of aircraft, a limited number of passengers, the distance that may be flown from the point of departure, and flight into controlled airports.
Private pilot certificate – Allows a pilot to carry passengers and use his or her aircraft for limited business purposes.
Commercial pilot certificate – Allows a pilot to fly for compensation and hire
Airline transport pilot certificate – Required to fly as captain by some air transport operations.
All pilots and co-pilots must be licensed by the FAA before they can do any type of commercial flying. An applicant who is’ years old and has 250 hours of flying time can apply for a commercial pilot license. You must pass a rigid physical exam and a written test. Before you receive an FAA license, you must also receive a rating for the kind of plane you can fly (single-engine, multi-engine) and for the specific type of plane such as Boeing 747 or 707.
Sound physical and emotional health are essential requirements for aspiring pilots. Emotional stability is necessary because the safety of other people depends upon a pulot remaining claim and levelheaded, no matter how trying the situation. Physical health is equally important. You must have 20/20 vision with or without glasses, good hearing; normal heart rate and blood pressure, and no physical handicaps that could hinder performance.

The Fastest Way To Fly A Fighter Jet – Combat Flight Pilot License
Becoming a fighter pilot is the dream of many, but it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to fulfill this dream. It is a long journey and some don?t quite make the requirements and perhaps this is due to not knowing all of them because there is a long list to complete. For those who are looking in this direction for a career, here is an outline of the requirements that you will need to tackle one by one.
Enrolling to Become an Officer of the Navy or Marine Academy
The first step is deciding whether you want to enroll in the academy for the Navy or the Marines. Each has different career lifestyles to offer you. Once you have enrolled, you must meet the physical requirements to become a pilot which are stricter than usual. You also fit into the cockpit and have good eyesight as well.
Upon your commission you have to choose your field of aviation before entering flight school. Even though technically you will apply for this aviation position, you will not make the last decision but the school decides this in the end.
Flight School
When you enter flight school you will always be considered of a lesser rank than anyone else until you achieve your pilot wings and this takes extra hard work. There are two categories of which you will be graded on. They are your academic classes that you will be attending such as the principles of flight and meteorology; then there is the flying that you will be graded on. This is done through flight simulators and actual flying.
During this time you will constantly be evaluated so if you start at the bottom you can earn your way to the top, however, it is essential that you remain in the highest of standings. The better that you do means there is a higher chance of getting into advanced flight training.
Advanced Training
There are two components of this advanced training. The first is the wilderness survival school. You will go through several days of training first before you are tested by being left in the forest to use these learned skills such as knowing which plants and insects you can eat and how to get clean water. You will also be trained to survive as a prisoner of war and when tested, if you are captured, you will have to undergo the same treatment and torture as real life would have it.
The second part to this training is when you are trained on the same type of plane that you will be flying when on the job. Once you have passed these tests and graduate from advanced training you will be considered an official fighter pilot.

Night Photos Taking – Why is the Photo Quality So Low?
Many keen camera users have a compact, sophisticated point-and shoot camera which is used for most if not all of their photography needs. Most of these cameras are from manufacturers such as Canon, Sony or Samsung. It the camera is fairly new, it probably features a high megapixel count and a host of other fabulous technical features, not to mention its probably sleek and sexy too.
Although you have all these fabulous features, you may be puzzled, disappointed or frustrated at your inability to take a quality photo at night or in low-light such as indoors away from a window. You may have found that photos you take at night come out either blurry, horribly washed out by the flash, grainy/noisy, lacking in color, or all of the above.
Why is this? The fact is that almost without exception, any camera will take sharp, clear, photos in good light ” such as the light outside during the middle of the day. It is much more difficult for your camera to take a photo that approximates what your eyes see when the light is dim. The primary reason for this is that in order to gather enough light to expose a bright enough photo your cameras shutter has to stay open a lot longer when the light isnt good. Because it is impossible to hold a camera completely steady with your hands alone, your photos will therefore be blurry. To get around this, you could use flash (which often looks unnatural and gives people a nasty-looking complexion) or a high ISO (which will add ugly digital noise), but these methods have their own problems.
Listed below are three tips to help improve your low-light photography:
1) When you purchase a camera, ensure it is equipped with an ‘optical image stabilization’ feature. This technology refers to a sensor inside the camera that will compensate for any movement from the person holding the camera and correct it to make sure you have a quality photo.
2) Try turning off the flash and asking your subjects to remain very still. Have your subjects move nearer to you in low-light or simply play around with your cameras Night Mode setting in the menu. It is important to remember that in Night ode, you must remain very still.
3) If the subject of your low-light photo is non- moving such as a building, try bracing the camera against something. A small tabletop tripod is easy to carry and works great, however, in a pinch, a tree or light post can serve the same purpose.

Unions That Benefit the Filmmaking Industry
For independent filmmakers, at least when you are starting out, unions won’t be much of a concern for you. You will normally hire your crew and actors from non-union members. Once you have made a couple of films and have started to make some money though, you will find you will need to make the transition to hiring union workers.
There are many unions, even more local ones, ranging from Directors to Projectionists. Here are just a few of the unions you might be faced with in your filmmaking career.
ACTRA
The Alliance of Canadian Cinema and Radio Artists is obviously a Canadian union. It’s the sister union of the US based AFTRA. This is an actor’s alliance, including performers in film, television and radio. As well as voice over artists, puppeteers, stunt performers, dancers and background performers.
Founded in 1943, this unions works to promote its members as well as protect them while they are on the job. As with any union, they negotiate wages, medical and dental benefits as well as retirement benefits for one particular branch.
Just like the Academy Awards, ACTRA hosts an annual event to honor its members.
To become a member of ACTRA, you must have had at least one speaking role in a film or television production. This rule does not however apply to background performers as they do not generally have a speaking role. In addition to this requirement, members must pay a $75 initiation fee as well as a $75 annual fee.
AFTRA
American Federation of Television and Radio Artists is based in the United States and like ACTRA, protects their members by negotiating wages, working conditions and benefits.
AFTRA represents Actors, Journalists and anyone working in the media and entertainment industries.
Founded in 1930, this makes AFTRA one of the oldest unions in the United States. In 1937, it began including radio artists and has now evolved to include negotiations with the Screen Actors Guild or SAG.
CFTPA
This is the Canadian Film and Television Production Association. It represents Television and Multimedia companies. They manage labor agreements, taxation, trade, copyright, broadcasting and film.
This union also trains young people about the industry and how to compete in it. This union is mostly for independent producers and production companies.
Directors Guild of America/Canada
The main focus of this union is on representing Directors, Assistant Directors, Unit Production Managers, Associate Directors, Stage Managers and Production Associates in both Canada and the United States.
As with any other union, this one negotiates wages, benefits and working conditions of Directors of film, Television, Stage, Media, Broadcasting and any form of production.
This union has evolved into a worldwide union from its humble beginnings in 1934 with only 100 members.
SAG
Founded in 1933, SAG or the Screen Actors Guild was designed to protect actors and their rights. It was formed when Directors controlled the contracts of actors in order to release the actors from these unbearably long contracts that did not truly benefit them along with making sure the actors were treated fairly while under contract.
The main reason for founding this union was that at the time, studios and producers held actors contracts and forced them to work excessively long hours. In addition, many of these contracts controlled the actors lives, including their personal lives.
In order to make their working life bearable, 21 actors started this union to improve their careers. It’s one of the only unions that has stood the test of time and has always done their best for their members.
The requirements for joining this union include filling out an application as well as having had at least one speaking role.
WGA/WGC
Writers Guild of America and the Writers Guild of Canada, promote writers in the film and television industry, media, CD-ROM, movies and news broadcasts.
The unions purpose is to negotiate contracts for its members and then enforce them with producers and directors. They also ensure their members receive medical and dental benefits in their contracts as well as residual pay for all screenwriters.
They have training programs and resources offered to writers of the union. Novel authors and screenplay writers can have their work registered with the union to protect it from anyone trying to steal it, or take credit for it.
There are many more unions including ones for theatre, projectionists, camera operators and post production. Depending on what area you are involved in, do some research and find out their requirements before submitting an application to them.
