A settee could be a very crucial part of our lives. It is usually kept in the living room, but occasionally people do keep a sofa in the bedroom or perhaps the balcony, for varied purposes. Henri Matisse, Joan Miro and George Braques all became friends of Pablo Picasso after he moved to the capital of arts, Paris, in 1904. Here Picasso was introduced to new art movements by its very influences, such as French Fauvism and Picasso.

Picasso was a big fan of the works of Paul Cezanne and this was the inspiration for the newly founded art movement of Cubism, and later, Synthetic Cubism. Fellow artists George Braque and Juan Gris were also key to the principles of Cubism.

Picasso painted Guernica in 1937 as a protest against an air attack during the Spanish Civil War and is one of his best known paintings, not only for its quality, but also what it symbolised. His symbolic styles were continued in Dying horse and Weeping woman.

Guernica by Picasso remained at the museum of Modern Art, New York until 1981. After that it was taken to the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain and then the Queen Sofia Center of Art, also Madrid in 1992. Picasso had prevented the Guernica returning to Spain until the end of Fascist rule by General Franco.

The hallmarks of the contemporary aesthetic are the use of neutral tones and clean, sleek lines paired with little to no excess details. This doesn’t, however, mean that you have to deck your room out with all the sterility of a hospital. Going overboard with the contemporary look almost always ends up with a room that looks and feels cold and aloof. Next, focus on the furnishings. Contemporary design is often decorated with materials like metal, stainless steel, glass and nickel. Incorporate two or more of these materials, or utilize wood for your flooring. Surprised? Yes, wood can also be designed for a modern theme. If you wish to stick to a marble or tile flooring, you can always use wood in your decors or some pieces of furniture to give the space a look of originality and homely feel.

A texture that breaks up the typical uniform sleekness of a contemporary space will make just about any room feel like part of a home. Fabrics are very useful for adding texture to a room; a brightly colored throw here and there will have a huge impact in the overall visual effect of the decor.

A contemporary design is usually lighted by a bright, overhead or ceiling lighting. This leaves little warmth to make a room look intimate. To achieve this look, make use of lamps and recessed lights. These will bring a soft glow to the room as well as add a decorative element to make the space more stylish.
