Create the outline of the patio using the stakes and mason’s cord. Use tape measure to check the length of all sides and diagonal. Your shape should be a square.

Take your shovel and lift grass or soil approximately 2 inches around your boundary. This is where the edging will be placed once the patio has been laid.

Next, tip the gravel into the hole. Use 2″ x 4″ board to smooth out the gravel. Use tamper to compact the gravel. It is critical the gravel is level. After all you want a level patio.

Tip in the sand. And rake over to completely cover the gravel. Smooth out the sand using your 2 x 4 board. Compact it. Once again, check that it’s level.

Start putting down the paver bricks. Start at one end and work down. Regularly check to ensure your bricks are level.

When your square is complete, start laying down the edging.

Spread sand over the patio. Use the stiff bristle broom to do this. Finally hose the patio. You must use a fine spray so that the sand washes down into the joints.
