Snowman earrings are an easy project for beginning or advanced jewelry makers. A variety of beads can be used, including clear or opal Swarovski crystals, white pearls, white or clear glass beads as well as anything else that resembles a snowman.

Gathering the Beads and Supplies

Looking in the bead stash is a great place to start when assembling beads for snowmen earrings or pendants. Items needed to make snowman earrings include the following:

Jewelry Tools

* flat nose pliers
* wire cutters
* round nose pliers

Beads for the Snowman Body

* two round beads, smooth or faceted: one 8-mm and one 6-mm, or other staggered sizes in clear or white or other ‘snow’ looking color such as light pink or light blue

Hat and Scarf

* hat: one flat black disk-shaped bead with hole running through the middle for the brim and one square or cube black bead with the hole running through the middle for the top portion of the hat
* scarf: a silver daisy bead, flat silver disk with crystals, or other round disk-shaped glass bead of any color

Findings

* two headpins, any metal tone, such as gold, silver, copper, brass, gunmetal
* two ear wires, the same metal tone as the headpins

Assembling the Snowmen

The technique that is used to make snowmen earrings is the same as for making any pair of earrings. Using a headpin, the largest bead for the snowman body is added to the headpin. Next, the bead that will serve as the snowman’s scarf is added. Next comes the snowman’s head. There should be three beads added to the headpin.

The next bead to be threaded on the headpin is the brim of the snowman’s hat followed by the square or cube bead for the top of the snowman’s hat.

This completes the snowman for one earring. This process is repeated on the other headpin to complete the second earring.
Making the Loop at the Top

The next step is to use the flat nose pliers and grasp the straight portion of the headpin at the top with the flat portion of the pliers. The next step is bending the wire of the headpin at a 90-degree angle fairly close to the top bead using the flat nose pliers.

To create the loop at the top, the round nose pliers are used to bend the long, straight end of the headpin creating a loop. To make the loop secure, using the wire-wrapping technique by winding the tail of the headpin around the bottom of the loop finishes this portion of the loop. To complete it, the wire is cut using the wire cutters close to the bottom of the loop so no excess wire sticks out. Flat nose pliers can be used to press the wire against the headpin if the wire sticks out.

To ensure the wire does not fly across the room, it’s important to cover the wire with your hand.

This process is repeated to finish making the loop on the second snowman.
Attaching the Ear Wires

At this point, the actual snowmen should be assembled with wire loops at the top. To attach the snowmen to ear wires, slightly bending the ear wires open allows the loops of the snowmen to be slipped onto the ear wires. The ear wire openings can then be closed using the flat nose pliers.

Simply making one snowman and attaching a jump ring or split ring to the loop creates a snowman pendant that can be worn on a necklace.

If snowmen earrings are going to be given as gifts, creating a small card makes a nice display. Using stiff paper or cardboard and stamping it or adding holiday stickers makes a festive holiday gift for young and old to enjoy throughout winter.
