Why Your Kids Should Be Playing Outside
Growing up over 20 years ago, I can truly say that some of my favorite memories took place in the great outdoors playing with my neighborhood friends. We’d get into all kinds of stuff like playing baseball in the street, biking up and down the neighborhood, and digging up trenches to bury our treasure. This of course was before the time of the internet, computers, and video games.
I am now an adult raising my own children and I have noticed a shift in what children used to do for fun to what they do for fun now. Children stay in the house so much that they probably don’t even know what’s outside. The computer and the television take up so much of their recreational time that they don’t know how to play games like baseball or hide-n-seek. Despite this shift, though, it is your responsibility as a parent to make sure that your kids are spending time doing not just physical activities but enjoying the great outdoors. Don’t let real sports die. Here are a few good reasons why your kids should be playing outside.
Better Social Skills The world we live in requires that you be able to socialize effectively with people. Everywhere you look you are dependent on other people to help make aspects of your life better. Kids who play indoors by themselves to not learn how to interact or socialize with other kids which does not help them in developing into productive and successful adults. Playing outside with other children teaches them to socialize, resolve conflict, and network as well.
Better Physical Condition Childhood obesity is one big problem facing America these days; twenty years ago, however, this was not a concern. Why? Because kids played outside. They ran, they jumped, they hit balls and got plenty of exercise. Kids who play inside can’t get this same amount of exercise. The are often sitting down while playing video games or playing on the computer. Doing physical activities outside helps to ensure that your children are in good health physically.
Better Grades Kids have a natural tendency to have a lot of energy. If they are going to be able to focus in school they must have an outlet for releasing this energy. That means that children need to enjoy as least an hour a day of free time where they get to run around and explore in the great outdoors. Lots of kids have been diagnosed as ADD or ADHD but what parents don’t realize is that by hindering their children from playing outside, the in fact cause their children to be unable to focus. If you had tons of energy bottled up it may be hard for you to concentrate in school too.
The more we move into an age of advanced technology, the more we should keep in mind those things that got us to this point. Physical exercise and outdoor play is our friend and we shouldn’t forget it.
Dorthy Weatherbush believes that all kids should be forced to play outside so that they can get all of the exercise that they need and not have to end up on a Medifast diet. While diets like Medifast are great for adults, kids should not have to worry about weight issues or dieting.
You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out Still Rings True
The saying “You’ll shoot your eye out” is one of American pop culture’s favorite quotes from the movie “A Christmas Story”. Ralphie asks his parents for an air rifle, and once he got one, he almost shot his eye out an definitely broke his glasses.
Sitting too close to the TV can make you go blind? Myth, or Fact? Actually, it’s a myth. The fact is that it causes your eyes to become fatigued or tired. What really causes the problem over sitting too close is your hearing ability. If the TV is in focus it wont’ hurt your eyes.
However, sitting for long periods of time playing video games, being on the computer, or watching TV, can cause dryness and irritation to the eyes. Strain doesn’t come from the lack of movement because we get plenty in our daily lives.
Staring at the computer for too long can cause headaches and fatigue. But it’s not just bad for your eyes; it can be bad for your entire body too causing stiffness and cramps.
Are you more hunched over trying to read your screen on your laptop? Do you sit properly at home when using your pc? Do children really know what is going on around them when they have just spent four to five hours playing the video games? Those same video games that are graphically designed to be real world simulators and push their adrenaline glands can be straining their eyes.
I don’t know about you, but If I spend too much time sitting in one spot on the computer, I find myself becoming less active and more lazy. If I am playing some online game or a computer game I feel as though I have to complete it before doing anything else so I end up playing it way too long.
Kids should not sit in front of the television or computer for a long time. Instead they should spend their free time running out in the great outdoors and being involved in physical activities. That way they are exposed to less electromagnetic energy.
Being exposed to electromagnetic energy over and over again for a long period of time can cause serious biological problems. Studies have shown that it can effect the nervous system, although the long term effects do vary among people.
So eye sight is an issue, due to the proven fact that staring at one object too long does cause fatigue and dry eyes. That the body is becoming chemically over stimulated from the subsequent virtual world, and is being exposed to long term electromagnetic energy messing with the biological system raises even more concerns.
They may not be shooting their eye out with the Red Ryder air rifle like Ralphie, it still isn’t a good idea to sit in front of the t.v. or computer for too long.
Dorthy Weatherbush tells her children to be careful no matter what they are doing. Whether they are putting Avery Labels on envelopes or playing with their toys. Avery Labels can cause paper cuts, and too many toys can be dangerous if left on the floor, which means you could put your eye out!
My Treasured iPhone Games
I’ve had my iPhone for over a year now, and I love the apps on the phone. There’s no better way for me to pass the time now, whether I’m riding on the train or waiting for an appointment to begin.
The games continue to improve, as updates and new versions are constantly released. Some of them are incredibly addicting. I’ve never paid money for an iPhone app, so the ones that I mention here are all free games that you’ll have no problem downloading and enjoying if you have the phone. Let’s take a look at my top three.
If you’ve never played Paper Toss, I would recommend downloading it. It’s a free game, so you have nothing to lose by trying it out. All you have to do is take a crumpled piece of paper and throw it into a garbage across the room.
The best part about this game is the enemy that stands in your way. The enemy here is an office fan that blows your paper in different directions. Since you can see its speed in advance, it becomes a challenge to accurately get the throw right.
Have you ever played that game in a bar where you have to touch the differences between pictures? If you have, you’ll probably enjoy ESPN’s game, which is just like this. It’s called Camera Man and you’ll basically be doing the same thing, only on your phone.
This game might keep me occupied more than any other. Sometimes I’ll sit down for hours at a time with this game.
3. Scramble. This game is just like Boggle, only you can play it online against over 100 people all at once. I love the idea of competing against others, which makes this game extremely addicting once you take the pride factor into consideration.
Try any of these games out. Based on their overall popularity, I have a feeling you’ll enjoy them very much.
