Did you know that North America hosts more than 200 species of butterflies? They range in size, color and pattern and provide an interesting show to those who enjoy taking in natural marvels. Drawing butterflies into your landscape is easy once you know the basic needs of their life cycle. If you provide a place for egg-laying, food for caterpillars (larvae), a setting for chrysalis formation and nectar for adult butterflies you will be rewarded every year with new butterflies. Here’s what you need:

1. Feeding larvae. The butterfly larvae (caterpillar) is drawn to various plants depending on the specials you are trying to attract. Black Swallowtails like plants such as carrots, parsley and dill, while Viceroy Caterpillars eat leaves from the willow and poplar tree. Monarchs eat milkweed plants. Still others thrive on weeds such as thistle and nettle, so feel free to include a variety of plants.

2. Feeding butterflies. Once the caterpillar develops into a mature butterfly, its eating needs change dramatically. They need bright, colorful blossoms that grow in clusters for easier collection of nectar. Pink, purple, red, yellow and orange works the best to draw them in. Also keep in mind that butterflies will need to feed for an entire season so you’ll want to plant flowers that bloom one after the other in a continuous cycle.

3. Plant location. Butterflies require lots of sunlight, but don’t linger where it is too windy. Consider creating your ‘butterfly islands’ behind larger trees and shrubbery to block the wind if need be. Also make sure that you’re attracting them to areas with low traffic. A butterfly garden wouldn’t do well next to a children’s play area, for example.

4. A water source and place to bask. A shallow pan of water with coarse sand or a birdbath will offer a place for butterflies to drink. You should also know that since butterflies are most active on sunny days, they’ll need flat rocks to bask on in order to raise their body temperature to allow them to fly around in search of food.

Once you created an environment that is rich in color, plant variety and sunshine you should be rewarded with a season full of butterflies. Their life span is short, some only 10 to 20 days, but they are fascinating to watch now that you know more about them. Enjoy!

Pablo Picasso, born in Malaga, Spain in 1881, was the son of an art teacher who encouraged him into the art world, and quickly recognised his talent. After joining the Barcelona School of Fine Arts at the age of 14 Picasso progressed quickly and soon convinced others of his extraordinary talent and creativity as an artist.

Picasso spent the years of 1900 to 1906 in what is referred to as the Blue and Rose Period. The Blue period involved the use of blue in most of Picasso’s works to represent a negativity and sadness of his paintings and those within them. Art experts, even those who rejected his later innovative style, respected his blue period. The rose period signalled a choice of brighter pink tones over the previous blues.

Henri Matisse, Joan Miro and George Braques all became friends of Pablo Picasso after he moved to the capital of arts, Paris, in 1904. Here Picasso was introduced to new art movements by its very influences, such as French Fauvism and Picasso.

Picasso was a big fan of the works of Paul Cezanne and this was the inspiration for the newly founded art movement of Cubism, and later, Synthetic Cubism. Fellow artists George Braque and Juan Gris were also key to the principles of Cubism.

Picasso painted Guernica in 1937 as a protest against an air attack during the Spanish Civil War and is one of his best known paintings, not only for its quality, but also what it symbolised. His symbolic styles were continued in Dying horse and Weeping woman.

Guernica by Picasso remained at the museum of Modern Art, New York until 1981. After that it was taken to the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain and then the Queen Sofia Center of Art, also Madrid in 1992. Picasso had prevented the Guernica returning to Spain until the end of Fascist rule by General Franco.

Originally, just as with movies, all film for still photography was black-and-white or sepia. It wasnt until the mid-20th century that color photography became feasible for the masses. Obviously color photography is now open to anyone, and given that we see the world in color, why would we want to deliberately remove color from our photographs?

This question is unique in that it brings about the answer of identifying when to take a black and white photograph or when to remove color from a photograph using an editing program such as Photoshop.

The answer is quite simple, to simplify the photo. Using black and white or removing the color from a photo enables all distracting elements to be eliminated. This process is similar to that of blurring the background or playing with the frame of a photo.

Now that we have answered the why to our question, let’s explore the when, or more precisely, the three main situations one might wish to remove color from a photo.

# Color Portraits – Taking a photo of someone using color photography reveals a close up to their facial flaws. Things such as skin discolorations and blemishes become a distraction to the viewer and leave them unable to see the true emotions, life and personality of the person in the photo.

# In abstract fine art photography

Abstract Fine Art Photography is the art of capturing shapes and patterns. Using color photography for this art form defeats what the photographer is trying to accomplish as color distracts from the main subject.

Note that black-and-white photographs are generally more tolerant of contrast, so fine art photographers will often strip out color from their photographs and then ramp up the contrast (again, using an image editing program).

# Monochromatic Photography – In this situation, black and white usually works best.

Having a photo that is lacking brilliant color is distracting. Hence, it only stands to reason that it be stripped and made a black and white photo. Just as color can be distracting, so too can be the lack of lustrous color.
