How to Detect a Leak

Plumbing leaks can occur at any time in your home. There are obvious leaks and then those others that you don’t realize you even have that can end up costing a lot of money.

There are some signs that you can look for in your home to make sure you don’t have any hidden leaks going on. Some of the signs are; if you can hear a continuous drip or noise when nothing is on, you water meter shows changes when you don’t think you are using any water in the home or outside, if you water bills rise suddenly, and if your can start smelling musty smells or odors in your home.

Leaks happen anywhere in your home where there is running water. You can end up spending a lot of money if a pipe leaks on household times, treasures, or if it ruptures.

The main leaks that happen more frequently are, sink leak, faucet leak, toilet leak, bathroom leak, dishwasher leak, washing machine leak, kitchen leak, laundry room leak, septic tank leak, sewer main leak, hose bib leak, and sprinkler leak. These are places that we are pass by daily and should be able to check up on easily.

There are others that are more hidden throughout our house though. Watch for spots on the walls or ceiling. There can be leaks behind the walls, landscaping, roofs, basements, and under concrete or asphalt.

These are more hidden leaks and you can try to find out if there are leaks yourself, some might be difficult to spot though. This is usually when I call in my trusted professional to take a look and see.

None of the signs listed above should be ignored. We’ve always got to be keeping an eye on our water bill, meter, and pipes to make sure that everything checks out okay.

Just remember that if you wait too long to get your pipes checked out that you could end up spending a lot more money than if you had caught them in time.

Back Flow Prevention

Home and business owners who complain about their annual back flow device tests normally do not understand what the consequences of having a broken device means. I try to take the time to explain the importance of back flow prevention and why these devices are so important to the safety and security of our clean water sources.

Back flow devices protect a water source from being contaminated by whatever the back flow device is connected to. This can be important for obvious reasons, especially when the water source is connected to hazardous equipment.

Back flow prevention is put in place to ensure that there are no problems with contamination of our drinking water or the water line. Our water systems are normally needed for the general health and welfare of the public, so having a device that prevents water from flowing back into the water mains is very important.

There are different types of devices which can be installed, depending on the water system or potential hazard that can occur. A simple device can be installed on your outside faucets for under $5, while a more complex device can be installed on your water connection for over $300.

Many of these devices are tested annually, which can be very frustrating for its owners. Yet what they may not realize is that this testing is required because there are still over 10,000 reported cased of cross contamination due to back flow.

It is understandable for owners of these devices to become frustrated by the constant testing that occurs. Since many of these devices are tested annually they mostly don’t worry about the consequences that may happen if it weren’t working correctly. It is important to realize that there are still over 10,000 reported cases of back flow contamination each year. If you own or are responsible for a back flow device, you need to know that back flow devices are prone to failure. The reasons for these failures range from the condition or the piping or device, to the equipment connected to it.

The law requires back flow devices to be installed correctly. There are plumbing and building codes put in place to make certain that the law is maintained. Back flow assemblies are also required by law to be tested to make certain that everything is operating correctly.

If a back flow device is not working properly (fails to operate) it will need to be repaired or replaced. A good tester will be able to determine why a device is malfunctioning or seeming to malfunction. Digital equipment is now used to aid in diagnosing any problems that arise.

The Importance of Water Conditioning

Not many people know the differences that there are between hard water and soft water. These really can make all the difference in your home. You can also save money now and in the long run depending on which one you choose for your family.

The major difference between the two is that hard water has a lot of dissolved minerals. These include such minerals as calcium and magnesium. Soft water on the other hand has been treated so that it only has sodium.

Hard water can ruin pipes and leave nasty residue. These build ups can damage as well as clog up your pipes. In the long run you can have more problems and spend more money on your piping that if you had been using soft water.

Soft water can also help protect your appliances that use water. These build ups do not just affect your pipes but the actual appliances that use them. Using soft water can prevent such problems that hard water can cause.

As small as the difference may appear, it can have larger consequences. Hard water is exactly that, hard. It is harder on everything that it touches.

When you think about your drinking water you never related hard water to having a lot of impurities, but that is exactly the case. You can simply cure this by installing a water conditioning system for your family. This will get rid of those impurities and provide clean and pure water for your family.

It is also known that clean water can actually clean better than hard water. The reason why this is so is because with hard water, the water itself has a reaction to soaps because of all of its impurities. That is why your soap tends to lather less in hard water than soft.

This also causes you to use more shampoo and conditioner to get the same effects as you would with soft water. Soft water is also gentle on your hair and skin so they both will actually look healthier.

Air Duct Info

Our air ducts should be an important part of our home. We need to treat it as such with periodical cleaning. They can hold within them many things that we don’t want infesting into our home.

Some of those things are mold and dust. When we think of contaminated air we think of outside pollutions. At times, these pollutants can be worse within our own homes.

That is why it is so important to have your air ducts cleaned. This doesn’t mean that you need to have them cleaned every other week. Periodical clean up is what is recommended.

Other things can get in your air ducts, such as; soot, smog, tobacco smoke, household smoke and dust, animal dander, pollen, hair, skin flakes, virus, and bacteria.

Sometimes you can have an insect infestation in your air ducts. This is another common reason why it’s important to periodically get them checked. If you have reason to think this might be the case, get a hold of a trusted professional that would be able to check them out for you.

When air begins to flow through your air ducts you should not have to see excessive dust or mold. If this is an issue for you, call a professional today. They will be able to tell you what exactly you have in there and what can be done about it.

Once you’ve spotted mold it is time to call a professional. Some people try to do it by themselves but usually we can never get it all or clean as well. Sometimes we can actually spend more money by buying cleaners and equipment than if we had just called a professional.

If you have any of the above, call a professional to find out what they can do for you. Sometimes we’ll try to save money by buying cleaning supplies and cleaners to do it ourselves. Most of the time this will cost us more and we wont have cleaned it sufficiently.
