Why You Need Water Purification Technology

Sometimes we take the most important things in life for granted, like a clean glass of water. But such a seemingly simple luxury takes a long time to get right. Water purification technology actually dates back to 2000 B.C, and its still a work in progress. But perhaps one of the oldest industrialized purifying methods is distillation.

You see the process back then to get cleaner water and filter out contaminants was very simple. What they did was take the original water and put it in a pan and bring the water to a boil, the vapor was let off went up through a copper coil, where it then would cool and return to liquid form. You probably are sitting there wondering how that worked. It was simple they believed that the contaminants were too heavy to raise with the vapor leaving them with clean and bacteria free water.

Experts eventually realized that methods of water purification such as distillation had several drawbacks. The process was not a complete purification –some contaminants still ended being transferred in the steam. Another disadvantage was the high cost of this filtering procedure. Over time, distillation requires large amounts of energy and water for the process to work effectively.

Now the cost really mattered quite a lot, but not as much as trying to figure out a way to completely clean out all the contaminants in the water. Back then they didnt have the technology that we do now so they for the most part had a hard time identifying new bacteria in the water.

Most of the contaminants that are in water today are so small and so microscopic that there are special filtering systems just for them. These special filtering systems are so precise in catching all contaminants that they have pores that are 1 micron big. Now if you are sitting wondering how small 1 micron is, think that a strand of your own hair is 100 microns big, and thats how small they are.

To eliminate these tiny particles, a treatment called micro filtration is used. In some cases it is also referred to as sub-micron filtration. A micro filtration system has parts with pore sizes ranging from just under 1 micron to about 0.05 micron.

There are several design options out there to filter water. A good counter top or under-the-sink filtration system can help. The most common water purification technology systems used in the U.S. are carbon block and granular carbon filters.

Granular carbon filters and carbon block systems remove certain chemicals that are dissolved in the water and then trap them. Nevertheless, other chemicals, like sodium or nitrate, are not affected by the carbon and do not get removed.

Through all the technology that has come out there have been many different attempts to have fully clean water. With that said the EPA has recognized activated carbon as one of the most effective forms of disposing of contaminants such as VOCs (volatile organic chemicals) and THMs (trihalomethanes).

You see one of the things that make it hard for families to know exactly what kind of filter they need is that they do not do any research before hand. Most of the modern day technology in filtration uses multi-media block filters to get cleaner water, but if you do not know whats in your water or are unaware what a multi-level filtering system are then you wont get one.

In this day and age there are so many things in the water that can affect your health that you really need to pay close attention if you are drinking from the tap. The best thing to do is have the water checked to see exactly what contaminants are in there, and get a filtration system that will eliminate all the bad and leave all the good in the water.

Home Water Purifiers And Filters Effective And Inexpensive

Water today drinking it straight from the tap can be extremely toxic. Most people do not realize exactly what some of the toxic chemicals that are in your tap water can do to harm their bodies. If you are looking for a filtering system, and do not have any knowledge on which one are the best for you, you need to do some research or talk to an expert.

The first thing I’ll start with saying, is that you do not need Japanese rocks. If you have heard the claims that have been made by the company, they are unverifiable.

You dont need reverse osmosis, if you are serviced by a public provider. Most of them already perform this step. If you have a well, find out whats really present in your supply and compare the products that will remove them. Reverse osmosis is often recommended but rarely necessary. It is also quite expensive.

There are so many different bacteria and other things that riddle tap water that you really need to find a filtration system that will work for what your water contains. You see, you want to remove all the bad stuff in the water but you do not want to get rid of the minerals that are good for you body.

Public supplies are known to contain a variety of contaminants. Treatment facilities remove many of them, but not all. Samples taken from homes and offices around the US have been found to contain high levels of weed killer and bug spray. There was an article about the tests in USA today not too long ago.

The most commonly used pesticides and herbicides in the US are known carcinogens. Many of them have been banned by the European Union. But, farms and lawn-care experts are spraying them freely in the US. Only a few home water purifiers and filters will remove alachlor, lindane and Atrazine, the most common weed and bug killers.

You see you can’t see them, so most homes do not think that they are there. However, when consumed you obviously know now that they are very harmful to your health, and the health of your family. The reason why most people do not know what is in their water is because local facility plants do not have to publish there water testing reports, so no one really knows whats being sent to your home.

There is another type of contaminant that has been found in water is actually caused by the treatment methods themselves. The chemicals that have been used for disinfecting cause the formation of cancer causing compounds known as THMs or trihalomethanes.

The big difference in the more expensive brands of home water purifiers is what all the water filtering systems gets rid of. Most of your more expensive brands of water filters remove these THM’s, where the less expensive brands only reduce the chlorine.

A multi-stage system removes the widest range of contaminants. The necessary stages include a carbon and multi-media adsorptive block, ion exchange and sub micron particle filtration. With these three steps, home water purifiers and filters can remove all of the hazards mentioned here, along with many others. The price may surprise you, since the best ones cost around $125.
