Just two weeks ago, Ryan applied for a position as a bouncer at one of the local nightspots. He had studied aikido, gatka, ninjitsu, judo, and karate for nine years; he was a weight lifter; he took daily minerals, vitamins, and supplements; he was into healthy eating and health foods; and he seemed well suited for such a job. When Ryan got the announcement that he had been selected for the job, he was exceedingly satisfied. Since this was an elite club, however, he had to go through a two week instructional class.
On the very first day of class, the instructor started talking about individuals who drink abusively and what the bouncers, barmaids, and bartenders should do when this state of affairs arises. When the teacher started discussing alcohol poisoning, Ryan was happy to find out that all of the new workers had to learn about an alcohol overdose and precisely what they should do when they observed a drinker who was manifesting alcohol poisoning symptoms or displaying the signs of alcohol poisoning.
More exactly, all the new barmaids, bartenders, and bouncers learned that nausea and vomiting were almost without exception one of the first signs of alcohol poisoning and that unconsciousness was perchance the most highly obvious alcohol overdose symptom or sign. The instructor went out of his way to underscore the fact that alcohol poisoning symptoms were signals from the body and from the brain that the individual had ingested more alcohol than his or her body can metabolize.
There were, however, several other symptoms and signs of alcohol poisoning that all the new workers were taught to be familiar with. For instance, the members in the class discovered that people with alcohol poisoning exhibit poor reflex responses, are difficult to awaken, often have seizures, and they exhibit confusion.
Moreover, the members of the class learned that many individuals who suffer from alcohol poisoning also manifest slurred speech; slow, shallow or irregular breathing; blue tinged or pale skin; and little response from painful stimuli, for instance from pinching.
To underscore the impact that binge drinking has on alcohol poisoning, the trainer explained to the members in the class that a person who gets intoxicated just a few times on an annual basis is, by definition, involving himself or herself in alcohol abuse. Such a person, however, is in all likelihood not an alcohol dependent person, but is more likely than not engaging in binge drinking. As articulated by the lecturer, engaging in binge drinking even once, sadly, can lead to an alcohol overdose that in some instances can be deadly.
The lecturer then told the students in the class that the best response for alcohol poisoning is the following: if it is assumed that a person has alcohol poisoning, call 911 and ask for immediate medical assistance, even if the person is underage. By following this course of action, the drinker will get the prompt alcohol poisoning medical attention he or she requires.
After learning about alcohol poisoning and particularly about the signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning, it may be pointed out, Ryan understood that he had discovered some important information that might save a person's life in the distant future. Undeniably, Ryan learned that knowledge of the familiar alcohol poisoning symptoms and signs and knowing how to properly and quickly react to such symptoms and signs (by promptly calling 911 and asking for urgent medical assistance) can help a drinker avoid a lethal alcohol overdose.
