Barry dropped out of high school when he was sixteen years old and eventually found employment at a local Kmart. For the last five-and-a-half years he has gained a reputation as a hard-working employee who hardly ever calls off work due to sickness.

Just about eight months ago he began going out with a woman named Carol. They seemed to hit it off right away and gave people the impression that they had a lot of good times with one another.

When Barry met Carol, he almost never drank. This situation totally changed when Barry and Carol started seeing each other on a fairly regular basis. In actual fact, everything was going great until Carol surprisingly called Barry one night approximately 4 AM and said that she had to breakup and that she couldn't tell him what was going on at that time.

Barry's supervisor heard about all of this from Barry's co-workers and from Human Resources. So one Thursday morning he asked Barry to come into his office. He mentioned to Barry that he had recently noticed a definite change in his attendance, behavior, work performance, and in his sick time.

"Barry, I'm not an expert about alcohol facts and I am not particularly well-informed about alcoholism facts, but I have seen more than a few of my relatives and friends experience some really damaging issues due to their excessive and hazardous drinking. Barry admired his supervisor quite a lot and as a consequence followed through with his suggestion the next morning when he called and scheduled an appointment with a therapist in the employee's assistance program. Even though Barry didn't automatically feel any better or less depressed about the sorrow he still feels for Carol, he felt some comfort knowing that his manager and his co-workers cared about him and wanted what's best for him. This gave him some psychological relief for the first time in a number of months and he actually experienced some hope that he would get his life back on track.
