A Considerate Supervisor Helps A Worker Address His Abusive Drinking After A Shattered Relationship

Barry dropped out of high school when he was sixteen years old and eventually found employment at a local Kmart. For the last five-and-a-half years he has gained a reputation as a hard-working employee who hardly ever calls off work due to sickness.

Just about eight months ago he began going out with a woman named Carol. They seemed to hit it off right away and gave people the impression that they had a lot of good times with one another.

When Barry met Carol, he almost never drank. This situation totally changed when Barry and Carol started seeing each other on a fairly regular basis. In actual fact, everything was going great until Carol surprisingly called Barry one night approximately 4 AM and said that she had to breakup and that she couldn't tell him what was going on at that time.

The next morning before he went to work, Barry went to her apartment and found out right away that Carol had already moved out. Barry took this really hard. In reality, he was stunned because they seemed to be getting along so very well.

So what did Barry do about Carol? Instead of working through his sorrow and pain, he started getting inebriated nearly every night. It didn't take long for his fellow employees and for his manager to notice that Barry was coming to work late at least once per week and that he constantly called off ill. Not only this but some of his fellow employees made an appointment with staff in the HR Department and stated that Barry constantly came to work with a noticeable smell of alcohol on his breath or on his clothes.

Barry's supervisor heard about all of this from Barry's co-workers and from Human Resources. So one Thursday morning he asked Barry to come into his office. He mentioned to Barry that he had recently noticed a definite change in his attendance, behavior, work performance, and in his sick time.

"Barry, I'm not an expert about alcohol facts and I am not particularly well-informed about alcoholism facts, but I have seen more than a few of my relatives and friends experience some really damaging issues due to their excessive and hazardous drinking. My suggestion is that you learn more facts about alcohol and what alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency can do to a person."

"Why is this relevant? When people engage in irresponsible and abusive drinking, their drinking issues not only adversely affect the problem drinker, but they also make a negative impact on her or his friends, co-workers, family, relatives, and neighbors. Barry, in sum, I would like to see you get some help for your irresponsible and abusive drinking from our fine employee's assistance program."

Barry admired his supervisor quite a lot and as a consequence followed through with his suggestion the next morning when he called and scheduled an appointment with a therapist in the employee's assistance program. Even though Barry didn't automatically feel any better or less depressed about the sorrow he still feels for Carol, he felt some comfort knowing that his manager and his co-workers cared about him and wanted what's best for him. This gave him some psychological relief for the first time in a number of months and he actually experienced some hope that he would get his life back on track.
