Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the most financially challenged private high school in the district. Even though she had been teaching for only three of four years, she had already established a reputation as an educator with teaching techniques that encouraged and inspired the students in her class to learn and to think.
For instance, one Friday morning at 11:30 she addressed the pupils in her classroom and said the following: "For the next few days we are going to learn about some commonplace alcoholism signs from a general viewpoint and we are also going to learn about some of the most typical signs of alcoholism from a more specific viewpoint."
"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will categorically reveal that a drinker with a drinking problem is an alcoholic, but the more signs that an individual exhibits, the more likely it is that she or he is an individual who is addicted to alcohol."
Miss Jackson then informed the members of the class that each pupil would be responsible for examining three alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her findings to the rest of the class via a twenty-five minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were presented and discussed in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked her students to study the list and rank the top nine alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After about twenty minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and explained to her pupils that after she reviews the results, she will reveal her findings the next school day.
Miss Jackson asked the students in her classroom to go over the information she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, issues, or questions. Within 20 or 30 seconds, almost everyone in the classroom raised his or her hand. It was noticeable that the pupils had some issues, concerns, or questions about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. For example, virtually every student disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism specialists, namely, "Do you feel really nauseous when you refrain from drinking?"
Miss Jackson then told the pupils in her class why this answer was the most precise sign of alcoholism. She underscored the fact that the key difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.
Basically this means that when an alcoholic abruptly quits drinking, he or she will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the alcohol dependent individual, the pupils started to grasp the primary difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.
A few minutes later the bell rang, meaning that the end of class had arrived. Based on the enthusiasm manifested by the students when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson recognized that she had inspired and stimulated the students in her class to stop and think about a vital health issue and social problem that exists in our country.
