A Married Couple Becomes Distressed About Their Irresponsible And Abusive Drinking And Contemplates Whether They Display Any Signs Of Alcohol Dependency

Lenny and Angie have been married for four years. They wanted to experience some fun and excitement before they made up their minds to have children and so they consciously established a very vibrant social life.

The key issue, it needs to be pointed out, is that practically everything they do for excitement is related to drinking. For instance, all of the parties with friends, sporting events, dinner engagements, happy hours, and family get-togethers they attend have something to do with drinking.

If they were responsible or moderate drinkers this wouldn't be a major issue. Since they drink in an irresponsible manner, nonetheless, they are beginning to notice some clear-cut alcohol-related problems in their lives.

For example, just a few days ago Lenny was placed under arrest for his first DWI and has been ignoring responsibilities at work because of alcohol-related health problems. Furthermore, Lenny's last two or three performance appraisals at the office have been less than adequate and he has begun to forget what he says or does the times that he drinks. Lastly, Lenny has been experiencing sleep-related problems and his family has begun to grow concerned about his drinking situation.

Angie, on the other hand, has been feeling dejected about life in general and to cope with these feelings, she has been drinking more intensely than any time in the past six months. In addition, Angie has been getting a lot of throbbing headaches and suffering from very bad hangovers after drinking. As a final point, Angie has been feeling appreciably less active in the morning, she has been getting to work late at least every other day, and she has been receiving some negative criticism from her friends, coworkers, relatives, and family members about her unhealthy and abusive drinking.

One Tuesday evening while watching the television, Angie and Lenny went through the channels and discovered a TV special about alcohol facts and alcoholism facts in general and about alcoholism signs in particular. This television special was a real source of revelation to Angie and Lenny because many of the alcohol facts that were highlighted looked like they were unshakably associated with some of the alcohol related drinking problems Lenny and Angie had been experiencing.

With thoughts of the television program still etched in her mind, Angie asked Lenny if some of the alcohol dependency signs they have been displaying could mean that they are dependent on alcohol or perhaps becoming alcohol dependent. Lenny didn't know the answer to Angie's question and so he recommended that they make an appointment with one of the doctors at the nearby drug and alcohol treatment facility to find out more about the gravity of their drinking issues.

Ironically, although their drinking behavior hadn't yet changed, it was clear to see that Lenny and Angie were at the very least addressing their drinking issues, they were willing to find out more about their drinking situation, and they were concerned about how they could appreciably decrease or do away with the drinking-related issues that had started to intensify.

When Lenny and Angie went to bed that evening, they came to a decision that the next morning, Lenny would call and make an appointment for both of them at the drug and alcohol abuse rehab facility located in the middle of town. After they made a promise to one another that they would do whatever it takes to deal with the alcohol-related problems that had materialized in their lives, they actually had the most energizing night's sleep they could recollect in the last five months.
