A Young Male Requires Therapy For His Intense Depression, Relationship Issues, And For His Alcohol Dependency And Drug Addiction

Around eight months ago I had breakfast with a forty-seven-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from severe depression, has relationship problems, and who is drug and alcohol dependent. As affirmed by Benjamin, it is his drug and alcohol dependency and his intense depression that has had the most to do with his perpetual relationship difficulties.

As articulated by Benjamin, he is so defeated by his relationship issues and by both of his medical problems that he essentially has little or no enthusiasm to complete much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to finish three semesters of grad school in Italian.

Benjamin's situation makes me wonder if he is an illustration of a person who can look within and perceive his drinking problems and chemical dependency and do something meaningful about these problems. Or, conversely, if he is someone who has to hit rock-bottom before he gets addiction counseling that leads to long lasting sobriety.

It may be asked how rehab would help his alcohol and drug addiction. For starters, there are several newly created physician-prescribed drugs that can help Benjamin avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse, help him through the drug and alcohol detoxification process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in counseling he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the diverse stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to acknowledge the fact that there is absolutely nothing beneficial about drug abuse and careless drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that engaging in one or both of these unhealthy circumstances is the route to deteriorating health, legal problems, shattered relationships, poor work and school performance, a premature death, and financial difficulties. Fourth, counseling for his depression and for his relationship problems might help him deal with these medical issues more effectively and help create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally, in rehab he could also learn more about the different symptoms of alcoholism that he has manifested.

Since Benjamin lacks the motivation to do much of anything in his life, it is obvious that he urgently needs some hope for a more fulfilling lifestyle. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the treatment he needs for his mental illness and alcohol dependency and drug addiction and stay with his treatment routine.

Benjamin is clearly too young to be dejected in life. He doesn't understand this right now but if he can learn how to remove himself from alcohol and drugs via alcohol and drug therapy and get the counseling he requires for his intense depression, he can turn his life around and start living with passion, self-respect, and direction.

More positive relationships, positive change, self respect, and a meaningful life are clearly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can become inspired to obtain the medical treatment he needs, follow through with his treatment regimen, live his life in a sober and healthy manner, and learn how to cultivate a more positive attitude about his existence.
