Richard had a very difficult time keeping a job. If truth be told, due to his laziness and lack of motivation, he was jobless far more frequently than he was employed. And when he did get employment, he had a very difficult time getting to work in a timely manner, he usually received poor performance evaluations, and he called off sick so consistently that he commonly got fired a week or two after he began working.

It goes without saying that one of the results of Richard's less than acceptable employment history was the fact that he was without much money almost on a daily basis. In spite of Richard's less than positive employment history and financial negligence, nevertheless, somehow he managed to drink in an excessive manner on a daily basis.

So it came as no big surprise when Richard received a fourth DUI. When he went before the court, the judge told Richard that his alcohol-related behavior was deplorable and, as a consequence, he was going to sentence Richard to serve five months in the municipal jail.

During his time behind bars, Richard was expected to learn more about alcohol abuse facts such as alcohol consequences and alcohol deaths, about the negative consequences of hazardous and excessive drinking, and he was required to get alcohol counseling. The magistrate highlighted the fact that unless Richard gets professional alcohol therapy and learns how to live a life of sobriety, he will probably be spending more than a short amount of time imprisoned.

Richard stated that he grasped what the judge was proclaiming but he still believed that jail was not the appropriate sentence. The magistrate saw things differently and said that it was his professional duty to keep individuals off the streets who drive and drink and who get a DUI. To back this up, the judge outlined some respected, highly evaluated alcoholism and alcohol abuse statistics that emphasized some of the disruptive consequences that are associated with hazardous and excessive drinking such as alcohol related deaths.

Even though Richard knew that he drank in a hazardous and abusive manner, he never thought that he was an alcohol dependent individual. So it was a big surprise when Richard started to experience chronic alcoholism symptoms and alcohol withdrawal symptoms roughly three-and-a-half hours after going to jail.

To deal with his alcohol withdrawals in a harm free manner, Richard was transferred to an alcohol rehab hospital for alcohol detox and then returned to the municipal jail. While locked up in jail Richard received alcohol therapy but because he received this rehabilitation as something that was imposed upon him, he failed to take ownership of his careless drinking.

When his time in the city jail was completed, the judge without hesitation announced to Richard that he would be under strict observation and would be required to take periodic alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard failed to take ownership of his drinking problem and how he halfheartedly followed the rehab regimen while in the municipal jail, the judge knew that it was basically a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his excessive and irresponsible drinking behavior.

As the judge reflected on Richard's situation, he couldn't help but think about how some individuals never "get it" and learn how to live in a responsible and accountable manner.
