I like to read, but find it hard to fit in some quiet time on a consistent basis. I'm generally way too busy with my job and my home life to sit down with a book. Then I saw an internet advertisement for a site that sells unabridged audio-books, and I clicked through to look it over. They offered a free trial download, which I took advantage of. I loved it! Instead of having to find additional time to read, I could now simply listen to a book while traveling back and forth between work.
After that initial trial, I started checking out ways to get more complete audio books on CD. Becoming a full member at a site like Audible.com is one option, but I didn't wish to lock myself into paying $15 or more every month for audio books on CD. For those who can afford it, Audible is an excellent choice. They have a massive selection of complete audio books on CD, including a large number of new releases from the most popular authors around. The interface for downloading seems to be straightforward enough to use, and the files are able to be played on any digital music player available on the market. But as I said, I did not want to pay for a membership, so I continued searching.
I then found a web-page called Libras which offers free complete books on cd that anybody can download without paying one dime. The catch is that they only deal with periodicals which are in the public domain (meaning titles which are more than 75 years old) and the works are read by people who volunteer. If you like reading classics and do not mind the wildly varying degree of aptitude amongst the people who volunteer, then this would be a good alternative to joining a pay-to-listen program.
The best source of free whole books on cd ended up to be my local public library. My well-founded membership card allows me to "borrow" complete audio books for either 14 or 21 days, after which time the mp3s expire and can no longer be played. Two to three weeks is a great deal of time to get through one single book, so I have never had an issue with the time limit. Also, I do not mind that I cannot use the files again after the lending period expires. It's not just as if there are many titles out there that I would listen to over and over again.
Now that I am getting free complete books on cd from my library, my day to day commute has become more enjoyable and productive than ever. I love being able to just sit there and be entertained by hearing a good story as I drive. If you are focused on complete books on cd too, then I recommend checking out the sites I mentioned above as well as your nearest library. I'm sure you will find something you can listen to!
