I've always loved going to the flea market. Outdoor flea markets are my favorite, but I like all different kinds. It seems like my fascination goes back to when I was a child. We used to beg my mother to get to go to this one flea market downtown. You see, there was mechanical horse that you could ride for only a penny! My mother and dad would give us twenty cents each and let's go at it until we got bored. Then we would wander around, looking at antique jewelry, old photographs, strange arts and crafts, and all kinds of other assorted goods like plus size coats. We would never look at anything practical '" that was what my folks were there for. For us, fleamarkets were an exercise in the extravagance of our imaginations. We would attempt to think of bizarre things we could search for and try and find them. Not ordinary things like plus size coats, but really special items. Even though we rarely found what we were looking for, generally there was some-thing fantastic that surprised us.

As I have gotten older, I have seen a more practical use for The fleamarket. For children, flea markets are a place to run wild, and exotic and old-time fair specializing in rare and sought-after treasures, but for an adult they are something different: spots to get quality goods like plus size coats at discount prices. Regrettably, all of the flea markets around here stink. To be honest, I have not seen a good outdoor market since I moved to this part of Tennessee. You'd think that such a rural community would have antique stores, discount markets, & other places where people could exchange used goods & make just a bit of money off their second hands, but apparently the trend has escaped this specific county.

To some degree, the Internet has helped to make-up for the lack of flea market in the area. If I want to find discount electronics, low priced cookware, or even remaindered clothing, I can get it on eBay or one of many other internet sites selling low priced wares. Nevertheless, I still miss the flea market. Purchasing on line, you have less options. You are always taking a big risk if you purchase something used, because you can't look at it. Predominantly, you're limited to knock offs, generic reproductions, and the like. Nothing beats being able to barter face to face with some-one, evaluating the strengths and shortcomings of a product.
