Some Practical Information About Drawing Hands

Despite their complexity, hands are not too difficult to draw, but they do not break down into the simple forms of balls and blocks that way various other subjects do. Here's how to get around that problem of learning how to draw hands.

You will need to do about a dozen sketches prior to you really begin to understand how to draw hands. Start by thinking of mittens, instead of hands. That's because you have to simplify the look for yourself, but, as mentioned, the old balls and cones and boxes shapes don't truly work with hands. So think of a mitten instead.

The most important thing to get right for hands is the palm. See how it is narrower near the wrist, broader at the end where the fingers come out. Then look at the thumb. It makes a nice sloping "V" shape away from the index finger if you look at the hand from the side. But if you look at the hand with the tips of the fingers directing at you, you can notice something interesting. The "life line" in your palm, that defines how the thumb moves. It is so prominent on some individuals that it essentially looks like you could pull the thumb off in a neat segment, with it breaking off right at the life line. That knowledge can help you form the thumb area of the palm, and can make your drawings where the hand is grasping something look much more realistic.

After you have gotten the palm part of the hand down, sketch out what your 4 fingers are doing. Most artists "draw" or outline the fingers initially as a long bending squarish shape. In other words, as all one shape. Then they define each finger. But the fingers almost always fit within that virtual bounding box. It may stretch out like a fan, and can twist like a fan would, too. Notice how the fingers all tend to bend equally -- you hardly ever see one finger straight and the others bent, unless somebody is pointing. That's a good clue for how to express character or emotion, too. If someones hands were spread out flat, but, say, their ring finger was bent sharply below, it would indicate they were uncomfortable about something, or possibly that they had something to hide.

Start noticing people's hands. Knuckles and nail shape are highly important, and as you learn to "describe" different types of nail shapes and knuckles with your pencil, you will quickly be able to show age in hands.

Different drawing techniques for drawing hands, lend themselves more or less to drawing hands. Shading tools and charcoals are very good for drawing hands, because you can very easily use the shadows and highlights to indicate the shape of the hands. Line drawings of hands, while they can be very interesting, are much more difficult. So if you are having problem with drawing hands, use a charcoal or a shading item, and put down the pencil altogether.

Lastly, if you want to draw really good hands, you will need to study the bones and muscles that make them up. If you were in art school they would help you to draw the bones of a hand in great detail. It Is a difficult exercise, but you will never see a hand the same way again.
