The Negative Effects Of Unwarranted Work And Hazardous Drinking And The Motivation For Alcohol Treatment

Work was becoming too chaotic for a young police officer named Lonnie. Even though he had only been on the police force for three-and-a-half years, he was already known as a hard worker who rarely turned down working overtime. In fact, he was now working twenty to twenty-five hours of overtime each week and, as a consequence, he felt like he was losing his hold on his personal life. What made the situation more complicated, however, was the fact that Lonnie started going out drinking with a gang of fellow officers after work.

Clearly Lonnie was in a health related and emotional rut and experiencing some negative signs of alcoholism. Where Lonnie really experienced alcohol related problems and alcoholism signs, conversely, was in his marriage and in his family life. His wife wasn't really a nag, but she frequently encouraged him to stay at home more with the family rather than going out and spending money while drinking with his fellow officers.

When he was really honest with himself, it was clear to Lonnie that his abusive and careless drinking was negatively affecting his health, pocketbook, relationship with his family, and his work. So one Friday morning Lonnie came to a decision to talk to Richard, a trusted old police officer friend that he greatly respected.

Lonnie told Richard how abusive and irresponsible drinking was negatively affecting his work, health, relationship with his family, and his pocketbook. Richard mentioned to Lonnie that he understood totally because approximately seven years ago, he too involved himself with irresponsible drinking. In fact, Richard told Lonnie that abusive and irresponsible drinking can create so many problems in a person's life that virtually everything of importance can be destroyed. And lastly, Richard suggested that Lonnie schedule an appointment with an alcohol therapist at the work-affiliated drug and alcohol abuse rehab center.

Since his employee's assistance program was affiliated with this treatment clinic, it was not only very affordable but also quite convenient to seek rehab about his irresponsible drinking. And due to the fact that the staff at the alcohol abuse center was supportive, competent, and non-judgmental, Lonnie would be able to get alcohol treatment that made sense to him and something he could follow through on.

After talking to his counselor about how his drinking was adversely affecting his health, pocketbook, relationship with his family, and his work, Lonnie understood that he was burning the candle at both ends with his crazy work hours and his excessive and hazardous drinking. Once he comprehended that he was getting himself into a rut, after detoxification and with the help of his therapist, and after twelve weeks in rehab, he was at last able to quit drinking and stop working overtime.

The outcome was that Lonnie saw life another way now that he was in alcohol recovery and learned about alcoholism facts. Stated briefly, due to his alcohol counseling he not only was more patient when interacting with his wife and his children, but he actually had more money now even though he was working far fewer hours each week, he had more quality time to spend with his family, and he felt better and more healthy. Ironically, now that he stopped drinking, Lonnie and his wife were not only starting to save some money for a new house but he also felt more alert and more energized than anytime since he and his wife got married.
